|FAT| FASHION SCHEMATICS – TORONTO ALTERNATIVE ARTS & FASHION WEEK 2011

**Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion Week Announces |FAT| 2011: “FASHION SCHEMATICS” **

| APRIL 26 29, 2011 | 99 SUDBURY | 6PM-12AM DAILY | WWW.GETFAT.CA |

TORONTO, ON From April 26 –29, 2011Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion Week |FAT| kicks off it’s sixth year in production at a new venue – 99 Sudbury Street– for four days of multi-sensory stimulation & excitement! [FAT] continues to build alliances, connecting art, imagery and clothing, creating a framework within which designers and artists can reflect on fashion through a variety of diverse disciplines.

As a platform for inventive, pioneering and contemporary expression, |FAT| 2011 will feature 50 runway collections from national and international fashion designers, and over 100 visual artists, musicians and performers. The festival delivers a packed-to-the-brim schedule of breathtaking runway shows, exhilarating live performances, music, photography, films, videos and site-specific installations to celebrate leaders in a wide range of art forms.

2011 will mark the sixth edition of Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week. With this years theme of Fashion Schematics, [FAT] reinterprets the messages, systems, schemes and symbols inherent in the notion of fashion.

APRIL 26 |FASHION NARRATIVES| showcases the mythological, theatrical and imaginative realm of fashion. Designers and artists communicate ideas, concepts, stories and messages through visual dialogues and narratives.

APRIL 27 |NATURAL CURRENCIES| investigates the power of nature, sustainability and the use of natural elements as a dominant influence in creating design and art.

APRIL 28 |FASHION/UNFASHION| battles between two opposing directions in art, performance, design and music: the commercial versus the rebellious. Artists explore the ever-changing cycle of trends inherent in fashion and highlight the contradictory concepts of what’s in vogue.

APRIL 29 |DRESS CODES| explores work that is influenced by different cultural groups, subcultures, demographics, politics, sex and gender identities, looking at the social significance of clothing and who we are as defined by what we wear.

This year’s special presentation includes the INTERNATIONAL FASHION FILM FESTIVAL (IFFF) Preview Series titled Fashion on Film.As a preview to IFFF (to be launched in 2012), |FAT| and Everyone Is an Artist present a series of short films that explore fashion through moving image. Eight filmmakers collaborate with eight fashion designers to communicate fashion through narratives and conceptual videos. “Fashion on Film”includes films from designers Zoran Dobric, Pat McDonagh, Jessica Jensen and Gaudet; and Filmmakers Zenon D. Turczyn, Lynne Kamm, Thirty9 Steps, Kevin Kaners and more.

[FAT] rebels against the conventional, by challenging preconceived notions of what clothing can mean. It highlights that the realm of fashion is not only about beautiful clothes, but more importantly a social commentary, cultural expression and personal statement, acting thus as a symbol of identity and life philosophy. The festival emphasizes the existing fusion between popular culture and high art stressing that both art and fashion exist as a commentary of the present, registering a particular and unique moment in time.
