#8: GREEN DAY – UNO
The 8th Annual ANDY KIM CHRISTMAS SHOW will be held at the Phoenix Concert Theatre on December 13th. The Phoenix is at 410 Sherbourne Street. Doors 7pm – 19+. Tickets are $25.00 and are available at all Ticketmaster Outlets, Rotate This, Soundscapes or call 416-870-8000 to charge by phone. Performers announced include Ron Sexsmith, Kevin Drew and Brandan Canning from Broken Social Scene, with many more to be announced every week.
Last year’s “Andy Kim Christmas Show” was the most successful event of the Holiday season and this year’s promises to be even more spectacular. The concert event is the brainchild of music legend, and the evenings’ Host and performer, Andy Kim.
During this one-of a kind charity event, patrons will be treated to a classic variety entertainment show that includes holiday performances by some of the country’s most sought-after singer/songwriters and performers. Past guests including Sam Roberts, Lights, Ron Sexsmith, Alex Lifeson from Rush, Broken Social Scene, James Black & Rick Jackett from Finger Eleven, Sarah Harmer, Jacksoul, BUCK65, Honeymoon Suite, Arkells, Barenaked Ladies, and more.
This year’s charity is The Jeff Healey Park. Last year, the City of Toronto honored his memory by renaming Woodford Park, in the Queensway neighbourhood of Etobicoke where Jeff grew up, “Jeff Healey Park.” Andy says, “The late Jeff Healey was not only a towering figure on the Canadian musical scene, for many around the world, especially for those people living with disabilities, the way Jeff overcame his blindness and achieved great things in his short life was an inspiration.”
100% of the profits from this year’s show will go to the Jeff Healey Park musical project. Andy wants to incorporate a unique musical theme into the playground at the park, by adding musical instruments that all children can play and enjoy. Andy says, “I am thrilled this year’s charity will be the Jeff Healey Park. That park was a huge part of Jeff’s childhood. It seems so appropriate that future generations of children will be able to make music in the very park that he loved so much as a child.”
“I look forward to the Andy Kim Christmas Show every year… even more than Christmas itself.”
Going into its 8th year, the Andy Kim Christmas Show has been gathering friends and fans together to celebrate the spirit and generosity of the musical community in Toronto with all proceeds going to charity. Join us for a magical evening jam-packed with Canadian talent and Christmas music.
Born in Montreal, Andy Kim was inspired by the Beatles, Hank Williams, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Bob Dylan. He found fame in New York City at just 16 years old when he wrote How’d We Ever Get This Way?, the first of nine Billboard Top 40 hits, including #1 songs Rock Me Gently and Sugar, Sugar, one of Billboard’s “Greatest Songs of All Time.” A true Canadian son, Andy has been awarded the country’s top industry honor twice, the JUNO Award for outstanding achievements in the record industry, as well as the “Indie Award” for Favorite Solo Artist in 2005. Andy is a member of Songwriters Hall of Fame and was inducted into Billboard’s Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2010. Over his epic career, Andy has sold over 30 million records, with songs covered by music history’s greats, including Wilson Pickett, Tom Jones, Ike & Tina Turner, and Bob Marley.
His last album, Happen Again (eOne Music Canada) is his first album in over 20 years. His new music possesses the timeless, transcendent and transforming qualities of his songs before, while giving us a very personal look into the artist’s take on love and change.
Andy’s new album is almost finished, along with a documentary on Andy’s life is also in the beginning stages, both for a 2013 release.

The last time I saw Tech N9ne live was at the 2009 Rock The Bells festival at the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto. I was thoroughly impressed by his ever so tight stacatto patter that he’s known for. Rapid fire in seconds and it doesn’t sound repetative or fake, he actual means what he says when he’s throwing down a rhyme.
Aaron Dontez Yates from Kansas City is anything but new to the game, he has been the king of underground Hip Hop for years and only has just begun to surface the mainstream. Tech N9ne brought his set to the centre of the universe twice (Joking, this one is for the Quebequers, we all know how much you love Toronto.) Friday September 21st and Saturday September 22nd, both nights I heard were bananas! The door man said he only had about 10 tickets left for the Saturday show when we arrived and that was at 7:30pm. By the time Tech N9ne hit the stage those tickets I were long gone.
Opening up for Tech N9ne was Canada’s So Sick Social Club and MadChild of Swollen Members. If I had know every white rapper in the GTA was going to perform and none of the skilled MC’s would hit the stage until ten, I would not have been so early. Absolutly horrendous were majority of those who hit that stage, they were giving me a headache I couldn’t tell them a part. Short, white with Backstreet Boy facial hair, some stalky, all bald except the one female who attempted to spit only to be shut out and drowned by her co-performer. I thought okay here’s a female MC, I hope she throws it down! WRONG! So Wrong! She let the boys take the spotlight even when it was her verse. She was stuttering and did not rhyme with passion at all, why she even stepped to the mic I don’t know. Aside from the only female “rapper”, a few desperado girls were giving the boys a peep show for a t-shirt. Maybe, if it was for a legit Rapper with at the least some type of B status clout, you could have some dignity remaining. But, once your tits hit youtube for a random shitty ass r,ap group’s $5 T-shirt…Your judgement will forever be questionable ladies! So many women lack class, there are many ways to be sexy without desperatly flashing your headlights for every fugly wannabe.
On with the show! Ontario’s So Sick Social Club entertained the crowd before Madchild. This was not their first time opening for Tech N9ne, it seems like a trend for them everytime he has a show in Toronto. I saw them perform many years ago barely recalling their set. The crowd was loving their energy and their rapping isn’t bad, I like the fusion of guitar in their music. Rapping is their stronger suit because none of them are very good melodic singers however, they do put on an energetic set worth checking out. So Sick Social Club is: VooDoo Drew, Chris So Sick and Midnight a.k.a VooDoo Man they recently released their “Dead Friends Don’t Tell” LP available for purchase here.
Next up was Madchild also know as one third of the Juno Award winning Canadian Hip Hop group from Vancouver “Swollen Members”. Madchild (Shane Bunting) recently released another solo record titled “Dope Sick“. He came out strong, the crowd instantly errupted as he slapped and dapped every hand he could touch. I am familiar with a few of the Swollen Members’ singles and Madchild threw down a few of those, surprisingly he was pretty good. It was getting a little too crazy in the “mosh circle” area, the boys were a little too excited. The show was ages sixteen and up so a variety of people were present but mostly male. Madchild did a fantastic job keeping the crowd ripe and ready for Tech N9ne.
Teck N9ne’s right hand man Krizz Kaliko spit a verse before introducing The headliner to the crowd. Once Yates hit the stage, the crowd went bonkers wild at the Rockpile. He played a full set of almost thirty tracks and this was his second and final Toronto show for this tour. It was a nice treat for my ears to hear such smooth, passionate rhymes with conviction coming from the source. Tech N9ne is one of the very few rappers who has such a vast array of original material to choose from including tracks off of his latest E.B.A.H. ep. The crowd knew every word to every song he spit and didn’t want this night to end. You can find videos I filmed from the sets here and more photos here. Tech N9ne is the only MC anyone should be talking about and if he comes through a city near you go see him live!

What more could you ask for than seeing one of your favourite bands right before your birthday? This past Thursday I had the amazing opportunity to catch Coheed and Cambria at Virgin Mobile’s Mod Club theatre in Toronto. I rushed to the venue after work just in time to catch Coheed’s set. Thankfully, they had set up a small photo pit for the show because normally the Mod Club is a free for all. We huddled inside the venue, squeezing past the already sweaty fans to our pit and waited in excitement for the show to start.
They started their set with No World for Tomorrow, an amazing opener that had me and everyone else in the crowd going wild. After our three songs we were ushered out, having to leave the venue through the back door, walk around the building and come back through the entrance to enjoy the rest of the set. I tried watching the show from downstairs but I was stuck at the back of the venue, not being able to get through the herd of sweaty crowd.
The venue was so foggy it would have been an asthmatics nightmare; I managed to squeeze my way upstairs and get a spot by the railing to catch the rest of the show. Despite the heat, it was an amazing show! Claudio’s voice is always a pleasure to listen to, he is one of the most talented singers I have ever heard and the band has great stage presence.
It was nice to see them in a smaller venue because last year I saw the band at the Kool Haus in a Neverender. They performed a special acoustic set and then ‘The Second Stage Turbine Blade’ from front to back. There was more energy in the Mod Club crowd than in the Kool Haus and the stage and venue is almost half the size! Needless to say it was a great set, a photo of their set list is posted and includes songs from SSTB, Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, In Keeping Secrets and their upcoming album The Afterman: Ascension. Though this set was shorter the band came back out for three encore songs and it was overall a much Better performance by the guys.
I was disappointed though, no coat check on a colder night and not as many moshers! Coheed’s a pretty heavy band and have really hard core dedicated fans, I was surprised at how small the pit was and how many people were standing still. The album is due out October 9th. You can pre-order a sweet limited deluxe box set which includes a 78 page book, 4 CD’s, VIP Tour Laminate, medallion, certificate and a documentary DVD. The VIP pass included in the box set grants you early entry to all shows that Coheed headlines, you will also receive special access on the Coheed website with an area to download all the music as it is released including Ascension (October 9th) and Descension (February 2013). Along with all of that you could always win tickets to their sold out show October 11th at Webster Hall in New York City. An amazing package for any Coheed fan! Major thanks to the kind folks over at Live Nation and the Coheed and Cambria camp. For more photos of the bands Toronto set you can click here. If you have not yet caught Coheed and Cambria live you should.

In 2011, Smith began to brand and promote his “Keep It Movin” movement and shared the stage with names such as Wiz Khalifa, Machine Gun Kelly and Yelawolf. Smith had faced a lot of challenges in the form or hate, criticism, low-budgets and no support, but through it all he kept things moving and continued to work hard. His goal is to be a source of inspiration for those who have dreams of any kind, to always keep their head up and know that if they believe and work hard, good things will come their way.

Fallen Ca ptive is all about moving forward to take their music to the next level. The Balconies are gearing up for a busy fall full of touring to Los Angeles for FILTER Magazine’s 2012 Culture Collide festival and cross-Canada dates with Big Sugar and Wide Mouth Mason until November.
If the past few months haven’t been busy enough, The Balconies are packing their bags again, this time with their sights set on the west coast. The dynamic trio are representing Canada at FILTER Magazine’s 2012 Culture Collide Festival this October 4-7 in Los Angeles, California. Of course, one road trip is never enough, and the group will be playing their way across the country, joining blues-rockers Big Sugar as well as Wide Mouth Mason on Canadian dates including long overdue stops in Vancouver, Calgary and more.
It seems as if 2012 has been non-stop for The Balconies who released their Kill Count EP (Coalition/Warner) in February along with a music video for the title track. What followed was a flurry of touring including festival stops at the likes of South by Southwest in Austin, TX, Summerfest in Milwaukee and recently back-to-back dates at Edgefest and Ottawa Bluesfest. Their touring hasn’t stopped there with recent dates in New York City alongside U.S.S., the pleasure of opening for Sam Roberts Band at Jackson-Triggs Winery, and most recently Ontario dates with Los Angeles-based group The Aggrolites.
The raw energy and charisma that comes from frontwoman Jacquie Neville backed by Liam Jaeger on drums and brother Steve Neville on bass has left audiences in awe nationwide, a feat the critics have been quick to take notice of. SiriusXM named “Kill Count” one of the top tracks of 2011 and for the second time The Balconies were named Ottawa’s “Best Rock/Pop/Dance Group” in the Ottawa Xpress 2011 poll. Always gaining momentum it’s looking like 2012 will be another landmark year for the Ottawa/Toronto group. Tour dates and download links below.

Australian grunge rockers ARCANE SAINTS are coming to tour Canada with a vengeance this September, making up for their spring tour, which had to be cancelled due to an unexpected circumstance.
Traveling from Down Under to the Great White North, Arcane Saints will rock crowds from Toronto to Vancouver on a six-day adventure across Canada, kicking off on September 12 at Cherry Cola’s (200 Bathurst Street, Toronto, ON).
“We were devastated at having to postpone our Canada tour earlier this year but this tour is going to be bigger and better. Having opened for The Trews here in Australia they spoke very highly of the Canadian rock scene and we can’t wait to get over there and experience it for ourselves.” comments vocalist / guitarist Michael John
About: Arcane Saints came together when singer/guitarist Michael John (a relative of Iron Maiden founding member Steve Harris), invested his prize money from an international song writing competition and got a one-way ticket to Melbourne, Australia from his home country of New Zealand to form the quartet with bassist Jim Luxford, guitarist Michael “Sheep” Gooding and drummer Sam Sablinskis.
