EMELI SANDÉ

LIVE @ THE KOOL HAUS 2012

FEATURE EDITORIAL REVIEW

By: Fridae Mattas

EMELI SANDE LIVE @ THE KOOL HAUS 2012Friday November 23rd the latest Scottish vocal talent Emeli Sandé hit Toronto’s Kool Haus with Shawn Hook as supporting act. When I found out she was coming to the city I had to go see and hear her perform live. Emeli is one of the newer legit talents to reach the mainstream waves, the “Our Version Of Events” tour is her first headlining tour. In the past Emeli opened for acts like Cold Play performing at huge venues across the globe, she even sang a cover of Cold Play’s “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” in this set. Emeli’s real name is Adele Emeli Sandé, she started using her middle name “Emeli” as a stage name when fellow British songstress Adele’s star began to rise. My ears discovered Emeli’s music late last year just before she released her début record and began to explode in North America. Many people still don’t know who Emeli is and that is why I created FridaeTV, to introduce the world to fantastic new artists like Emeli Sandé! Once you listen to Emeli’s music you will understand.

Arriving just in time to catch the last two songs from Canada’s Shawn Hook who was opening the show for Emeli. He wasn’t too bad from what I caught and he even did a little autograph session at the merch table for his fans after the set. Watching the last bit of his set I could not tell if there was a pit, far too many people were crowded in front of the stage. All I know is, I will definitely have to check Shawn out again when he’s back in Toronto.

EMELI SANDE LIVE @ THE KOOL HAUS 2012

Once given our media passes we were escorted to the stage area, our Live Nation escort EMELI SANDE LIVE @ THE KOOL HAUS 2012then informed us there wasn’t a media pit to shoot from. She didn’t know in advance because she did not check the stage area of the venue prior to the show. I should have listened to my intuition and brought the 70-200 lens but decided against it because my confirmation email stated we were to shoot first 3 songs no flash from the media pit. Now, I had to shoot from the crowd with my regular lens and the fans were going to get upset for being in their space. So I did what I had to do, worked my way into the large crowd getting close enough to the stage as possible, explaining to the fans around me that I would only be there for three songs. Managed to capture a few feasible photographs to use in this editorial. Thank the Lord it wasn’t a rock concert without barricades because that would have been deadly.

After putting my camera away I came back to the venue to watch the rest of Emeli Sandé’s fifteen track set. People want to have fun and dance but they also have different issues going on in their lives and look for an escape, that’s where music comes in. Everyone can relate to music about relationships and heartbreak because life is filled with both.

EMELI SANDE LIVE @ THE KOOL HAUS 2012

My favorite songs of Emeli’s are “Heaven”, “Next To Me” and “My Kind Of Love”, she performed them all and more. A few other tunes I took a liking to are “Clown”, “Breaking The Law” and the final encore “Read All About It (Part III)”. She sounded incredible when she sang and utilized the large stage to the best of her ability with her band, a piano player and a guitarist. There were a few pitchy moments, very few! I can remember only one incident mid set during an acoustic track. She played a few songs on the piano herself while singing her heart out to the crowd and they were loving every minute! Well…The majority of us paying attention to the amazing talent on stage. These bobblehead broads in front of me kept taking Facebook or Twitter profile shots throughout the entire set and that was getting played out fast! Other than the bobbleheads, I enjoyed the rest of the show and was able to feel the music. If you like genuine talent with soul, your ears need some Emeli Sandé therapy! Go see her live if she’s in your area, I can guarantee that you will not be dissapointed!

Fridae’s Choice TOP 10 LIVE 2011

All Photography By: Fridae Mattas

Happy New Year! It’s 2012 and I was going to publish this last year but I had to think about it a little more and finally I compiled a list of the top fifteen. I still needed some time to let it swirl, absorbing into my mind and reflect once again on the insanity of 2011. It was an incredible year for coverage many firsts, the two book signings which were chaotic , I am still undecided on if I or any of the team will be covering any in store signings again, only due to safety concerns, all were very confusing and clustered but nothing compared to the album signing…That was beyond insanity, it amazed me that the artist still had such an impact on his fans and how many females still cried.

After much consideration among the incredibly talented candidates the conclusion is…My most favorite live performance was Boyz II Men at the KoolHaus. I grew up listening and singing to these R&B legends but that is  not why I chose them. Their set was a pure raw performance without auto-tune, stage theatrics or drama, it was just the backing tracks and their voices but it was not perfect there were some issues but there never is the perfect show, shit happens things go wrong all the time and people do make mistakes! Never the less Boyz II Men brought it back to how it used to be in music, when the real talent prevailed and the over glorified tacky redundancy was shunned. Regardless of the time period Boyz II Men were still able to draw and captivate a crowd without the need for explosives or a five minute prerecorded badly acted introduction skit. In this case less is always more and as a singer I have to give it up to them for being able to still throw it down showing everyone how it’s done. Below is my top 10 live of 2011 list and the top 5 honorable mentions. Each artist, group or band are at the top of the game when it comes to making those records come to life on the stage, electrifying audiences globally.

Thank you to everyone I have worked with over the few years, lets hope we have some amazing times again this  year! And a humongous THANK YOU goes out to YOU! The FridaeTV audience worldwide, it’s all because of you I am fortunate enough to interview, photograph, film and review some of the most talented in this small yet so vast entertainment world. Thank you to everyone for actually caring about this budding little publication and I appreciate all of your continued support! Wishing you all a miraculous 2012! Much Love xxoooo ~ Fridae

KRS-ONE’S NEW LP ON SUDBURY’S 6.8.2 RECORDS

All Photography By: Fridae Mattas

Sudbury Ontario based record label releasing albums by world renowned artists including KRS-One

Canada, May 30, 2011 – Sudbury, Ontario based record label, 6.8.2 Records, is gearing up for a very busy summer and a groundbreaking year. “It’s been a steady progression the last couple of years to get to this point. It’s hard to believe that we are finally readying ourselves to release some amazing new music onto the world” says Lynn Johnston Vice-President of the burgeoning label. You wouldn’t know that 6.8.2 Records has only been around for a few years, nor would you think an indie label with such a high calibre of artists would be based in Northern Ontario. With veteran artists like Boogie Down Productions, KRS-One & Bumpy Knuckles & Grand Puba releasing albums through 6.8.2 in 2011 it proves that this label is looking to make as much noise as it can right out of the gate. In fact, the first release from the label comes from KRS-One & Bumpy Knuckles on Tuesday May 31st, 2011. The album is called Royalty Check and it will be the first of many rolling out of the halls of 6.8.2 Records this year with the next album launch coming from Boogie Down Productions on June 28th. The Grand Puba album alone, produced by the Hit Squad from Bad Boy Entertainment, is a proverbial who’s who of the urban music scene with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes and P. Diddy making guest appearances on many of the tracks. This album is still in production so no confirmed release date has been set as of yet. The label isn’t just about releasing records from artists who already have a track record. They are also interested in artist development. “This city (Sudbury, Ontario) has some amazing talent” says Trevor Johnston CEO. “We just happen to be lucky enough to have one of the most talented local artists of the bunch (Michael O’Brien: Kill The Autocrat) signed to our label.”

Kill The Autocrat (KTA) is the first artist to be brought up through the development division. This specific project not only features Michael O’Brien as the principal songwriter and rapper, it also features the CEO of the label himself on drums and musical collaborator Scott Swain another Sudbury born artist most known for his work in the bands Far From Heroes and The Black Maria. Kill The Autocrat has also caught the attention of the Boogie Down Productions crew. Enough so that KRS-One will be collaborating with Michael O’Brien of KTA on a future track and legendary DJ Kenny Parker called the music of KTA “revolutionary” and stepped up to do all of the scratches for the album. The first release by KTA called “New World Disorder” will be unleashed to the world on July 5th, 2011.

The label 6.8.2 was started by Trevor and Lynn and Sudbury is their base of operations. Both are Northern Ontarians through and through. With Sudbury’s close proximity to Toronto it gives the label the opportunity to conduct business with clients based there easily yet the low overhead costs available in Sudbury helps them to stretch their dollars and cents allowing the 6.8.2 in house studio and development department to flourish. 2011 is a pivotal year for the label with summer releases coming from every artist on their roster, a 45 day North American tour showcasing all of their artists slated to start in mid July and extensive marketing and promotion initiatives supporting all of their artists. The music industry in the US and Canada is a buzz anticipating the release of many of the fledgling label’s artists. 6.8.2. Records’ goal is to provide honest music that has integrity to anyone who wants to listen and services that artists working in the modern era of the music industry will find to be fair and just. But don’t let the labels nicety’s fool you. They are all business and plan on making 6.8.2 Records one of the most successful indie labels in the world.
