HAIL THE VILLAIN LIVE @ THE TATTOO REVIEW!

Hail The Villain

Live @ The Tattoo Rock Parlour

By: Fridae Mattas

Finally!! At last I was able to catch a full ‘Hail The Villain’ set! I may have only caught the last few songs at the Hideout and missed the whole performance at Uproar Fest. but Thursday October 7th I got my chance. I also managed an interview with Lead Vox Bryan Crouch prior to sound check…Bonus!  The interview is PUBLISHED click the link! I have been hearing about this band for years, familiar with their tunes because they are that good! Hail The Villain are indisputably the most underrated band in Canada, refreshingly different from most bands yet still tenuously undiscovered.

WATCH THE INTERVIEW

HTV is probably the only band that I know of that has released their major début in conjunction with a comic book that relates to the music and videos for the movie with a videogame-esque interactive website…Do you follow? No worries my friends, Bryan explains it all in the interview. Those of you who already know about HTV, congratulations for knowing some spectacular music, group hug! To all who don’t know; if you are a serious rock fan this is a band you will never forget! The music grabs you immediately and if that doesn’t float your boat I am sure the live show will blow you away. Hail The Villain is from Oshawa, Ontario and is signed to Warner Canada/Roadrunner Records USA. June 04th 2010 they released their début record “Population Declining” and just wrapped the Rockstar Uproar Festival. Hail The Villain was to do a US tour with Disturbed joined by fellow Canadian band ‘Art Of Dying’ but that was recently canceled due to Disturbed lead singer David Draiman’s serious throat condition.

Hail The Villain were the headliners for the evening, working in the stage was ‘Bleeker Ridge’ and ‘Songs From A Room’. A quick mini jibber about Bleeker Ridge from Orillia, Ontario, the band is; Taylor Perkins – Vocals, Cole Perkins – Guitar/Vocals,  Dan Steinke – Guitar/Vocals, Dustin Steinke on the Drums and Brad Nicholson on the Bass. The band recently linked a recording contract with Roadrunner Records and dropped their major début ‘Small Town Dead’ on September 21st 2010. I have seen Bleeker Ridge once before, they impressed me a bit the first time but this time around it was better but not as impressive, just like singer Taylor Perkins said “They haven’t played for a while”. You could hear it clearly in the vocals during a few of the tracks, lead Vox was cracking and squealing letting the adrenaline take control for a few minutes before he quickly tried to keep it steady.

Don’t get me wrong I love his voice, the kid can definitely sing he has the talent, he can sing better than many a lead out there. Far too many lead singers can’t sing for shit, all they do is use vocal effects to mask how bad they really are. Yes, sadly it’s true,  the sound person and singer can manipulate vocals live with today’s technology it is possible. That is why I like to film from the stage most of the time, to get the real vocals. The band was mostly tight I noticed lead guitar skillfully handling his axe and Drummer Boy smashing those cans with fervor. The crowd however had mixed feelings, some were getting into the band, others just stood there and stared. Bleeker Ridge’s music is different than Hail The Villain’s, they are more along the poppy Top 40 Rock opposed to HTV’s Alternative Rock Metal sound. Taylor did his job working the stage; you could tell he liked being there entertaining the cameras and the crowd. It did come off a little fake at times but there was some genuine emotion there. Other than the whine in his voice I like everything about the bands sound. The other members in the band had their moments too but at times seemed slightly timid. Either way this band will probably top the charts soon enough, they are already making some noise on Fridae TV’s North American charts. Check Bleeker Ridge out if you can they are hitting the road!

Onto the main event, you can tell I go to the Tattoo Rock Parlour a lot, very picky with who and what I cover and where, when it comes to FridaeTV. Just because an artist is popular on the mainstream music scene, played on all airwaves and will give me some amazing stats, does not mean I would ever put them on FridaeTV. Stats to me are fun to watch but they are not important otherwise. To be featured on Fridae TV the artists must catch my attention and keep it, think of it like an exclusive club, you have to entertain my eyes and ears to be featured here. Hail the Villain passed that test when I saw the last tune of their performance at the Rock N’ The Park festival in 2009. The band is: Bryan Crouch – Vocals, Joseph Stamp – Guitar, Chad Taylor – Bass and Flavio Cirillo on Drums.

They started the set with ‘Try Hating The World’, a punch in the face angst ridden tune that has a fast paced high energy feel, perfect track to kick off the set. Crouch has been known by others to over perform and yell rather than sing, what I was getting is a true performer who knows how to entertain his audience. Obviously he stands out from many leads when it comes to being comfortable with the stage and captivating a crowd. His vocals are interesting very rare for this style, I actually fully understood what he sang because he enunciated his words properly. Super daps for being able to pull off screams, sing melodically and keep the fans on their toes. Crouch owned the audience before Cirillo’s sticks hit those skins; all boring bands need to watch and learn how a real Front Larry breaks it down. For those that think he over performs, go listen to your Josh Grobin and take a nap because that is boring. My official opinion is that Crouch does not need to calm the fuck down! He needs to keep doing what he does, it is most definitely working to their advantage, the best way to get noticed is to give the people a show to remember!

These days playing a show is the only guaranteed revenue a band actually has to count on: you play, they pay. If your live show is a flop and you don’t draw a crowd nobody will book your band. Records don’t make money anymore unless you’re Eminem or Justin Beeblets (I know it’s spelled wrong, that is what I prefer to call him) even they are hurting.  Major record labels won’t sign a band who doesn’t deliver a money making performance especially these days when they don’t have any money themselves to take those risks. Evidently, Hail The Villain was signed because they have the talent and can deliver a highly energetic set, every minute of the performance the crowd was ecstatically amused! Half of them have already seen the band live; the other half, had a whole new concert experience they will want to re-live again. The single ‘Runaway’ was played in the set, they just released the R-Rated video for the track and I must say it’s one fantastic video! Love the eyes so creepily fascinating. Every member in the band fits like a glove, I swear Bassist Chad Taylor reminded me so much of another Bassist whose name is also Chad, it’s like they are identical twins, so trippy. This Chad threw it down, totally feeling the music and vibing with the crowd. Lately I’ve seen some Bassists out Rock Guitarists, Axe shredders need to step up their game! Not HTV’s Guitarist Joseph Stamp, he absolutely embodied the music he played as Bryan sang those lyrics with conviction and Flavio destroyed those cans. The last song of the night was ‘Pyro’ wish I filmed it but I was trying to get some of my own shots but they didn’t turn out, thankfully my good friend Miss Jaylyn Todd who deserves a huge Thank You took some incredible stills. From the beginning to the end, I would definitely go see Hail The Villain live over and over again! You should go check them out the minute you hear they are in your town! Hail The Villain is heading out on the road this November and December new tour dates have been posted, you can finally have your chance, like I did.

SORRY AUSTRALIA!! I Know you are avid FridaeTV viewers but unfortunately Youtube does not give me the Australian Charts anymore. Don’t feel left out, Canada gets grouped in with the USA, there is no Provincial break down as there is with the individual States. There are stats by each Country but that only applies to the charted Continents, too much technical stuff.

DIE MANNEQUIN LIVE @ THE TATTOO MINI REVIEW!

DIE MANNEQUIN LIVE @ THE TATTOO MINI REVIEW

By: Fridae Mattas

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: MELANIE SCHADE

Last Friday, Sept.24th 2010…

Die Mannequin rocked the Tattoo Rock Parlour for FREE to the first 200 people who made it inside, presented by Hyacinth Group. I was scheduled to do an interview… It did not happen, lead vocals Care Failure was sick, if the girl can’t do it she can’t. I was sick too, still am. I’ll eventually do an interview with the band but for now I am going to tell you a little bit about how the performance went down.

The current band is: Care Failure –  Lead Vocals/Guitar, Anthony ‘Useless’ Bleed – Bass/Backup Vocals, Stacy Stray – Guitar and Dazzer Longknife on the Drums. I have seen Die Mannequin once before at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern way back at North by Northeast 2006. Since then I haven’t had the chance, there are way too many bands to check out. I eventually get around to seeing those I missed this is how it goes folks, you can’t make them all. If you want to know more about Die Mannequin hit up their Myspace and Website.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: MELANIE SCHADE FOR FRIDAE TV

The strobes were crazy!  Made me a little dizzy as I was filming but it was worth it because it looks so sick on film! You can check out a few of my favorite tunes from the set at the end of the article. Care tried the best she could, to give her fans an amazing performance even though she was sick,  downing a bottle of honey between a few tunes instead of JD. She is truly a forming Axe-Mastress getting in the crowd shredding as they surrounded her. She wanted to stay and just play but the fans carried her, resulting in surprise crowd surfing.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: MELANIE SCHADE

There were a few tunes that had similar chords and rhythms, other than that I love their sound! Failure does however need to work more on her diction she was mumbling a lot, the clarity wasn’t there. I won’t talk about the vocals because she was sick, I know it’s beyond hard to sing when you’re sick and she did turn it out. The band did great backing her up and holding their own. Bleed’s chemistry with Failure is obvious, bouncing off of each other talking to the crowd as if they were at home jammin’. Care and Anthony are the originals Stray and Daz were recently recruited, Die Mannequin is; ‘Failure’s Child’ (Hint hint..write a song). They tore it up regardless of Care’s wirus! Unpredictable, entertaining, talented and magnetic. The band now as a whole has this incredible synergy, that was missing when I first saw Die Mannequin they have found it. Let me tell you, Failure can rival all of the similar female singers who will remain nameless, go check DIE MANNEQUIN out!

Huge thank you goes out to my girl Melanie Schade for the incredible photos.

DIE MANNEQUIN FREE SHOW AT TATTOO ROCK PARLOUR THIS FRIDAY!

Hyacinth Concerts and Nightlife present a FREE SHOW with…

DIE MANNEQUIN and special guests at Tattoo Rock Parlour this Friday

Hyacinth Concerts and Nightlife present a special free concert featuring special guests Die Mannequin as the headliners.  The first 200 people to arrive at the doors of Tattoo Rock Parlour will get free passes for the triple bill show that also features openers Darlings of Chelsea and Dearly beloved.  The success of the Who’s Backstage Concert series, which is set to resume later this year, and the summer LOUD Concert series have allowed this free event designed for the fans.  Without the ongoing support of the Toronto’s live music revelers, the string of live shows would not have been possible – and Die Mannequin will be there to say THANK YOU to the fans with an amazing live show fueled with adrenaline infused pop-punk metal blowout.

The band, who gained lots of notoriety at the helm of multi talented lead singer and instrumentalist, Care Failure (Caroline Kawa), who shook the infrastructure of the North American music scene with her raw and powerful image.  Songs like “Miss Americvnt” are one of many examples of the bold, edgy and shocking stance of Die Mannequin in music.  Lead singer, Care, hails from Toronto and embarked on her musical journey at the early age of 10 when she began playing the acoustic guitar and a memorization with bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana.  Her childhood was anything but normal and infused with an equal measure of music and personal turmoil.  Luckily, this all transpired into what is only to become a bigger and better music career and at the helm of EMI Music who discovered Failure when she was 17.

Die Mannequin studio albums Fino + Bleed (2009), Unicorn Steak (2007) and How to Kill (2006 EP) resulted in part from collaboration with MSTRKRFT, Ian D’Sa, and Jesse F. Keeler.  The band have also toured and shared the stage with music giants like Deftones, Sum 41, Buckcherry, Finger Eleven, Geddy Lee, and Guns ‘n Roses.  Check them out at Tattoo Rock Parlour this Friday, details are as follows:

FRIDAE TV’S FOZZY LIVE @ THE TATTOO REVIEW

 By: Fridae Mattas

Photography By: JAYLYN PHOTO FOR FRIDAE TV

For all that don’t know who Fozzy is you can read the bands bio on their website www.fozzyrocks.com

Photography By: JAYLYN PHOTO FOR FRIDAE TV

Last Friday August 6th Fozzy hit up Toronto’s Tattoo Rock Parlour as a part of Hyacinth Group and Molson Canadian Rocks ‘Loud’ Summer concert series. Fozzy the band is: Chris Jericho (Yes, the Wrestler) on Lead Vox, Rich Ward (Stuck Mojo) as Lead Axemaster, Frank Fontsere (Stuck Mojo) slamming those Drums, Sean Delson (Stuck Mojo) rocking the Bass and Billy Grey also on the Axe. Special Thanks goes out to my girl Jaylyn Todd for helping out with the photos, check out her amazing work www.JAYLYNPHOTO.ca and Hyacinth Concerts and Promotions www.HYACINTHGROUP.ca

The Tattoo plays host to many bands, some do well others flop hard, some are well-known others are trying to break. The worst band I have seen at the Tatt comes down to ‘Creed’ but there are many others I don’t remember for a good reason, they deserve to be right up there on the shit list with ‘Creed’.  As for the best band, I have yet to see one at the Tatt. The singer is the focal point of the band, if they can’t entertain a crowd in unison with showcasing their talent, the rest of the band can’t save them. For Fozzy that is not a problem, their front man is Chris Jericho of WWE Wresting Entertainment, his job was to entertain millions of wrestling fans for years.

Photo By: FRIDAE MATTAS FOR FRIDAE TV

I was going in blind, only heard ‘Eat the Rich’ when it was on rotation and have caught a few WWE Raw episodes. We’re talking way back in the day when you could smell what  ‘The Rock’ was cookin’ but I have yet to see Fozzy live.

During my interview with Winnipeg’s own, he said he’s always wanted to be in a band, it was either Wrestling or a band, he accomplished both. That is not an uncommon dream for guys, I have met many a larry who wanted to be a Wrestler/Athlete and a Musician/Actor. Chris J happens to be the first I’ve met of his kind who has followed through.

Photography By: JAYLYN PHOTO FOR FRIDAE TV

My least favorite part of being a Music Journalist  is doing reviews of any kind because people get the wrong idea and misconstrue many words, I hate breaking dreams and hearts when it comes to their art. I give out constructive criticism when I write a review to help the artists polish their talents and reach those dreams. Some can’t handle my honesty, I am just trying to lend a hand but the truth does hurt. Due to my natural ability to read people, it has become very easy to pick up on insecurities, if I don’t write a review it’s because I can’t help them and would rather not talk about it but sometimes I can’t refrain from expressing my opinion. To be a diamond in the rough you must already possess the talent to work with, otherwise stick to your day job. This band was extremely down to earth including lead vox, I didn’t pick up any arrogance or superiority complex as most assume coming from his WWE persona.

The thirteen track set started in with the fans cheering Fozzy! Fozzy! Fozzy! Of course the band egged them on to feed their egos adding to the adrenaline rush. The opening track was ‘Under Blackened Skies’ and they closed with ‘Freewheel Burning’. You can find the set list along with links to videos from the show and my interview with Chris J at the end of the article. Most of the crowd was male but there were some women, many of which were waiting to catch a glimpse of the band before and after the set by standing outside “The Dressing/Green room”. The Tatt was packed, filled with energetic Fozzy fans who knew the words to every track. During ‘Wanderlust’ Chris J let the crowd sing the chorus, soon after it went into Ward’s  Guitar solo, he jumped into the crowd ending the tune with the fans. He handed his Axe to one of the audience larries just to hold as he got back on stage, someone then asked the dude holding the guitar to play it, he gladly took on the challenge.

Photography By: JAYLYN PHOTO FOR FRIDAE TV

Vocals were alright he needs to work on those high notes, they were a little pitchy during some of the tacks and sounded a bit too nasally. For the most part of the set he was doing better than many bands who have been on that stage actually giving the crowd what they wanted. If he were to do a few sessions with a vocal coach that would take his vocals to the next level. Ward on the Axe was magical I love seeing guitarists who are truly into their music because once they play you can see the passion transmitting through song. If you don’t vibe to your own music with your heart and soul people won’t buy it and your career is over before it begins. Fozzy does not have that problem, every member in the band delivers the music with conviction, they all have great chemistry playing off each other like the pros they are. Fozzy’s new record ‘Chasing the Grail’ is available to buy now and they will be hitting the road once again to Europe in the fall. Would I go see Fozzy again, yes I would and so should every fan of Rock and Metal.

Hyacinth Concert & Nightlife and Molson Canadian Rocks bring you a brand new 3 part summer concert series, called LOUD, an event for people to enjoy live music from local and indie bands.  Following the success of their Who’s Backstage concert series launched earlier this year, Hy Events are excited to bring music lovers a night based on kick-ass music and nothing else.  Who’s Backstage will officially step aside during the summer months to make room for the highly anticipated LOUD series that will play on three different occasions throughout.

Once warmed up with the first edition of LOUD, the band FOZZY will step in to take the second installment to their legions of fans.  Best known as a touring, exciting, kick ass rock and roll band with a mascot named Arthur, Fozzy is an international indie sensation celebrated in the mainstream.  They started out as an Ozzy Osbourne tribute band that eventually went on to record original material and release a 30 minute “mokumentary” with the help of some famous friends.  Both MTV and Much Music played the film that featured Sebastian Bach, Dee Snider and Zakk Wylde with rave reviews.  They have also had lots of success internationally with their video for the song “With the Fire” played regularly on MTV2, Much Music and Fuse TV.  The video was also shown on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Best Damn Sports Show Period and The Craig Kilborn Show.  Howard Stern also had them on his Sirius Satellite show to play a battle of the bands which led to a lot more gigs, including appearing on WWE Raw, at the 2002 NAMM convention in L.A. and playing in front of 25,000 people at the Bang Your Head Festival in Germany with Slayer, Gamma Ray and Rob Halford.  Details of the event are as follows:

To call Fozzy an underground phenomenon would be an understatement.  Not only do they rock the stage to thousands at a time but have released two films on DVD, and contributed to various compilations.  Their song “Don’t you wish you were me” appeared on the WWE Originals CD in 2009 along with their cover of the KISS classic “The King of the Nighttime World” which graced the all-star tribute album “Spin the Bottle”.
