NEW MUSIC MONDAY’S

BAND OF THE DAY

DIE MANNEQUIN!

 By: Fridae Mattas

Canadian shit disturbers “Die Mannequin” are back with a new “Neon Zero” feel for everyone to groove with! Watch the new video below, read the press release and sooner rather than later you can read my review on the new record. Buy “Sucker Punch” here and keep your ears and eyes open for the new album “Neon Zero” to be released in October!

Die Mannequin is:

Care Failure – Vox/Guitar

Tony Bleed – Bass

Dazzer Scott – Drums

Stacy Stray – Guitar

“Proving people wrong is my favourite pastime,” laughs the singer-guitarist. “I always feel like I have something to prove. It’s kind of in my DNA. I know people have been like, ‘Oh crap, what is Die Mannequin doing?’ Because I haven’t been in the forefront for the last few years. I’ve been regrouping. But now I’m back.”

And back in the grPasted Graphic 24oove. Make that a new groove. A neon groove. Neon Zero, the band’s third full-length and their first for eOne Music Canada, finds Die Mannequin not just resurrected but reborn. Rejuvenated. And retooling their wham-bam-thank-you-man punk and guttersnipe metal with an inspired injection of edgy electronics, big beats, massive melodies and polished production. It’s the sound of the mosh pit invading the club floor (and vice versa). The look of a studded leather jacket over a miniskirt and heels. The equivalent of Courtney Love sucker-punching Metric’s Emily Haines and teaching Iggy Azalea the real meaning of a new classic. You need it simpler? It’s an album that puts the DM in EDM. And turns it into Evil Dance Metal.

You could call it a comeback. An evolution. Even a revolution. But you already know what Failure will say about that.

“It’s really just been a natural progression,” she explains. “If it sounds like a big change for people, that’s just because of the years between the last record (2009’s Juno-nominated Fino + Bleed) and now. I’ve been DJing quite a bit over the past few years, and what I do is very contemporary and quite dancey. And I’ve been writing a lot on piano again. I’ve always had so many different influences that weren’t necessarily just rock. But when I started in music I was 14 and 15 and I kind of got stuck in this teenage punk hell of having to play the same songs for 10 years.”

Well, it hasn’t all been hell. Those songs — like Do it or Die and Saved by Strangers (from their EP-compilation Unicorn Steak), not to mention their 2009 top-20 track Bad Medicine — helped Failure and longtime partner-in-grime bassist Tony Bleed crawl their way from underground clubs to arena stages where they’ve opened for dudes named Marilyn and Axl. Along the way, they earned that Juno nom for Rock Album of the Year, along with a nod in the New Group category. But for every high on the rock ’n’ roller coaster there’s a comedown, and Failure has been no exception to the same catalog of professional setbacks and personal indiscretions as countless other fluorescent heroes.

Getting here from there didn’t come easy. But then, nothing good does. And even if it did, Failure doesn’t do easy. For Neon Zero, she spent eight months of madness holed up with co-producers Arion Anderson and Nathan Quinn and mixed by Gavin Brown (Metric, Billy Talent, The Trews) and Lenny DeRose (Metric, Hey Ocean, Walk Off The Earth), sleeping in the studio and painstakingly crafting these tracks — mostly by herself, mostly from scratch. Then she got down to business, bashing and belting out the bulk of the album in an eight-day marathon with Vancouver’s Andrew Conroy. The ends justify her means. The stomping swagger of first single Sucker Punch, the ecstasy and violence of Welcome to the Badlands, the pulsing fuzz of Murder on the Dance Floor, the grind-groove of Knock Me Out, the ominous slow-burn of Pretty Persuasion, the live-for-the-moment anthem We Own the Night, even the tender-hearted neo-balladry of I’m Just a Girl — they upgrade and update DM’s scrawled sonic signature with sharp synths, layered vocals, undeniable grooves. But Diemaniacs needn’t fear the repurposing — it all comes without sacrificing one iota of Failure’s guitar-shredding grit.

Pasted Graphic 35

“I am such a riffy chick,” she admits. “I can’t help myself. I’m a guitar wanker. There is never enough rock in it for me. I love bands like Sleigh Bells and The Kills, where you have both electronic and rock. That was the whole point, to show you could have it all together. It’s trickier. You have to put more brainpower into it. But when it works, it’s way deep and way more guttural. The music sounds better when you can get it to run hand in hand.”

Now, freed from the shackles of her past, with the most focused, consistent and fully realized work of her career firmly in hand, Failure is ready to run headlong into the future.

“I made this album because I want to kick down doors,” she explains. “I want to be able to really evolve and grow as an artist and not have to do the same old thing again. I don’t want to have to play by the rules. That’s why I needed to do this.”

CANADIAN ARTISTS! YOUR BIG BREAK IS A VIDEO AWAY!

Big-Break-300x164 ENTERTAINMENT ONE & BEGIN AGAIN GIVE CANADIAN MUSICIANS THEIR BIG BREAK

WITH A CHANCE TO WIN A MUSICAL RECORDING SESSION AND A SHOT AT A

DISTRIBUTION DEAL WORTH UP TO $10,000.

TORONTO – JUNE 17 2014 – Entertainment One (eOne) and Begin Again are on the search for Canada’s top undiscovered music talent! Just steps away from their Big Break, Canadian singers and bands can upload their original works to a new YouTube contest (www.youtube.com/beginagainmovie) to be entered for a chance to win a musical recording session at Metalworks Studios and a Digital Distribution opportunity from eOne Music, the #1 independent music distributor in North America, worth up to $10,000!

Contestants must rally their friends, fans and followers to vote for their original work to avoid elimination. Only the top four artists make it through to the final round.  Canadian Recording Artist and Winner of Canadian Idol Eva Avila is joined by Eric Alper (Director of Media Relations at eOne Music and Host of ThatEricAlper’s Show on SiriusXM), Nathan Quinn (A&R and Label Acquisitions at eOne Music) and Kevin Dietz of Metalworks Studios in judging the four finalists and selecting the winning song.

image_242471_4“This inspiring film is set in NYC, and in a lot of ways, YouTube has the same huge caliber of undiscovered talent. Musicians can approach this like an open mic opportunity and do an original song to get heard by hundreds of thousands of music lovers,” explains Kai Exos, Creative Director at SPOKE and musician in his own right.

Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.

“eOne Music Canada’s mission is to discover Canada’s next big star and showcase their stunning talent to listeners here, and around the world,” says Eric Alper, Director of Media Relations for eOne Music Canada. “We’re thrilled to be part of the Begin Again YouTube contest, so get your best song ready!”

The campaign, developed by creative agency, SPOKE, lives on YouTube and is powered by a custom YouTube contesting engine. The launch is supported by a heavy Social Media buy on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter as well as in-store POS at HMV, that forms part of eOne’s broader wide-release Media campaign, which also includes broadcast, digital, social, print, radio and Out of Home.

eOne opens Begin Again in theatres across Canada on July 11.

He’s Alive! Former Hollywood Undead Frontman Finds A New Home.

DEUCE LIVES ON FIVE SEVEN MUSIC

Los Angeles, CA – California based lyricist, producer and knows-no-boundaries singer/rapper Deuce has announced plans to release his intensely anticipated debut solo album Nine Lives via Five Seven Music on March 27, 2012 worldwide. Experiencing unprecedented success as the Frontman for Hollywood Undead, and creatively fueling the band’s fire that lead to millions of views on YouTube and over 800,000 in album sales of Swan Songs, Deuce’s solo effort picks up right where the aforementioned sensation left off.

“This album has that signature Deuce sound and is similar in flavor to what I created on Swan Songs but completely unrestricted and rated NC-17. I took some of the shit I couldn’t get away with on Swan Songs and brought it to another level for Nine Lives. If you liked what I did before you will love this shit. Deuce lives mother-fucker,” says Deuce.

Deuce recently wrapped two music videos in Los Angeles, directed by Nathan Cox (Marilyn Manson, Linkin Park, Black Veil Brides), for “Let’s Get It Crackin'” and “America” from the upcoming album.

Deuce is a songwriter, producer, singer/rapper hailing from Los Angeles, CA. As the co-founder, former lead singer and main songwriter/producer for Hollywood Undead, Deuce emerged as the creative force that led the band to staggering albums sales of their debut, Swan Songs, which also reached #1 on the Alternative, Hard Rock and Rock album charts. Deuce is known for his signature masks and ability to jump start any party with his often raunchy and vulgar lyrics. Since his departure with Hollywood Undead in 2010, Deuce has performed in front of thousands at 2011’s Epicenter and has been gearing up for the release of Nine Lives.

KRS-ONE’S NEW LP ON SUDBURY’S 6.8.2 RECORDS

All Photography By: Fridae Mattas

Sudbury Ontario based record label releasing albums by world renowned artists including KRS-One

Canada, May 30, 2011 – Sudbury, Ontario based record label, 6.8.2 Records, is gearing up for a very busy summer and a groundbreaking year. “It’s been a steady progression the last couple of years to get to this point. It’s hard to believe that we are finally readying ourselves to release some amazing new music onto the world” says Lynn Johnston Vice-President of the burgeoning label. You wouldn’t know that 6.8.2 Records has only been around for a few years, nor would you think an indie label with such a high calibre of artists would be based in Northern Ontario. With veteran artists like Boogie Down Productions, KRS-One & Bumpy Knuckles & Grand Puba releasing albums through 6.8.2 in 2011 it proves that this label is looking to make as much noise as it can right out of the gate. In fact, the first release from the label comes from KRS-One & Bumpy Knuckles on Tuesday May 31st, 2011. The album is called Royalty Check and it will be the first of many rolling out of the halls of 6.8.2 Records this year with the next album launch coming from Boogie Down Productions on June 28th. The Grand Puba album alone, produced by the Hit Squad from Bad Boy Entertainment, is a proverbial who’s who of the urban music scene with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes and P. Diddy making guest appearances on many of the tracks. This album is still in production so no confirmed release date has been set as of yet. The label isn’t just about releasing records from artists who already have a track record. They are also interested in artist development. “This city (Sudbury, Ontario) has some amazing talent” says Trevor Johnston CEO. “We just happen to be lucky enough to have one of the most talented local artists of the bunch (Michael O’Brien: Kill The Autocrat) signed to our label.”

Kill The Autocrat (KTA) is the first artist to be brought up through the development division. This specific project not only features Michael O’Brien as the principal songwriter and rapper, it also features the CEO of the label himself on drums and musical collaborator Scott Swain another Sudbury born artist most known for his work in the bands Far From Heroes and The Black Maria. Kill The Autocrat has also caught the attention of the Boogie Down Productions crew. Enough so that KRS-One will be collaborating with Michael O’Brien of KTA on a future track and legendary DJ Kenny Parker called the music of KTA “revolutionary” and stepped up to do all of the scratches for the album. The first release by KTA called “New World Disorder” will be unleashed to the world on July 5th, 2011.

The label 6.8.2 was started by Trevor and Lynn and Sudbury is their base of operations. Both are Northern Ontarians through and through. With Sudbury’s close proximity to Toronto it gives the label the opportunity to conduct business with clients based there easily yet the low overhead costs available in Sudbury helps them to stretch their dollars and cents allowing the 6.8.2 in house studio and development department to flourish. 2011 is a pivotal year for the label with summer releases coming from every artist on their roster, a 45 day North American tour showcasing all of their artists slated to start in mid July and extensive marketing and promotion initiatives supporting all of their artists. The music industry in the US and Canada is a buzz anticipating the release of many of the fledgling label’s artists. 6.8.2. Records’ goal is to provide honest music that has integrity to anyone who wants to listen and services that artists working in the modern era of the music industry will find to be fair and just. But don’t let the labels nicety’s fool you. They are all business and plan on making 6.8.2 Records one of the most successful indie labels in the world.

ANVIL RISES; FRIDAE TV MAY TOP 10 CHART

Here we are! Another month passed by and it’s time to see what the people are watching on FridaeTV!

May was an exceptionally diverse month of music video watching, we have a new #1! FridaeTV is a fusion of everything that should be heard and seen!

No strangers to the top of the FridaeTV chart’s they have managed to climb to position #1 booting the Kittens of Girlicious from the throne and deking out the triple Norwood attack of Three Days Grace, My Darkest Days and Art Of Dying! Perhaps its because Anvil has been on tour for the whole month but that’s not true because every continent in the world watches this one. Congrats to Anvil for reaching the top of my charts once again! Honorable mention goes out to Boyz II Men for leaping onto the charts so fast I just put the videos up Sunday and guaranteed this won’t be the last we hear of the legendary vocal group!
