INDIE WEEK 2014 – EDITORIAL REVIEW FEATURING

BLAZE BAYLEY, LAUGH AT THE FAKES, SUMO CYCO, NEW CITY KINGS, THE RATHBURNS AND MORE!

By: Fridae Mattas

Indie week 2014 happened back in October notice the visual editorials already published. This chick is not one to give up easy, had some tech issues that were solved and then a big project landed on my lap from one of my international clients. These past few months too many job offers and have been turning down almost everyone, dedicating my focus on my record and the new FridaeTV 2.0. Enough with the excuses right? Here we go, the rest of this jibber is all “aboot” the bands haha! Normally, I filter the bands for quality, however, due to tech issues some of the bands were not recovered. We can thank the universe for filtering the bands this time…Still, I would have liked the option to choose them myself. Thankfully the FridaeTV visual team shot a few bands I wanted to tell you about.

NEW CITY KINGS LIVE @ THE HIDEOUT - INDIE WEEK 2014 - WEDNESDAY OCT.

It was good to see familiar faces I haven’t seen in a while including a few Montreal & American friends. Ya’ll are too fantastik! Wish I caught more bands and saw more amazing people I didn’t get a chance to hang with! Festivals are a multiple venue migration for the media. We have to work during and after, people don’t realize editing and writing are the most time consuming and least favorite aspects of multimedia. Okay, let’s get with the program! British band New City Kings were the first band I caught at Indie Week 2014, it was not the first time I have seen them and it sure as hell won’t be the last! They put on such a vibrant performance, always genuine and not forced as it is with some bands I have observed. The passion is missing in today’s music, the majors are dying out and more than ever focused on selling product, not art. New City Kings definitely feel their music and everyone needs to check them out! Enjoy a few shots thanks to FridaeTV photographer Joanna and a tune I filmed below.

Next up was last year’s Indie Week Canada winners, Toronto’s Sumo Cyco. They hit the stage at the Hideout after New City Kings for the opening night launch party. For a while now I’ve wanted to see this band live, when they rocked indie week last year I always missed the bands set but finally mission accomplished. The band is a new school metal punk blend, vocals are different and much more aggressive than most are use to from former Canadian poptart “Skye Sweetnam” who fronts the group. It is rare to find female fronted bands that kick ass, Skye did a pretty fantastik job holding down the boys and putting on a show for people to talk about. I remember my photographer Joanna commenting on seeing Sweetnam before but this suited her much better, I agree!! Go see “Sumo Cyco” if you get the chance!

The next few that survived the Universe’s cuts were rocking the Hard Rock Cafe on Friday October 17th! First up was Laugh At The Fakes a local band who I had yet to see live, of course I was running late thanks to the always delayed subway. Hoping to catch at least one song, when I arrived at the venue I was praying they were still on stage and they were. Managed to catch the last few tunes, which were surprisingly well done. A little more confidence is needed from vox and guitarist Everett Mason, he has the skills, just needs to overcome the nerves because the guitar he was rocking sounded amazing and the vocals have extreme potential. Always trust your talents, they will guide you and all you need to do is believe in yourself as you refine them! Laugh At The Fakes has a bright future ahead of them and everyone should go see a set to see what I’m talking about.

The headliner at the Hard Rock Indie Week Metal showcase was no stranger to the stage, former Iron Maiden frontman Blaze Bailey rocked out with his band. It was interesting to observe his interaction with the fans, they were a bit aggressive and so into it. I’m surprised a mosh pit wasn’t formed, then again they were too busy trying to touch Bailey like teenies do for their favorite artist, fanboys! Bailey’s vocals are unique yet he is the epitome of old school metal, clearly there is a reason he fronted Iron Maiden. The band was crisp, professional and entertaining but the crowd just focused on Blaze Bailey. Once I got the best shots I could in the always horrible hard rock lighting, I migrated to safety at the back watching the enthusiasm of the performer and the crowd. It was a cool set, if you love metal and get the chance, go see for yourself.

The last few bands I managed to recover we’re The Rathburns and Dick Rodan at the Virgin Mobile MOD club for the best of the fest, the Indie Week finals! Was not able to recover many photos of Dick Rodan but for a country band they did pretty well! The crowd was loving them and it was obvious who the Dick fans were…They kept chanting “We want Dick! We want Dick!” as the band was setting up their gear, yes it sounded funnier than it’s read. They put on a very high energy performance thanks to their super drunk guitarist jumping and playing in the crowd giving people a set to remember.

DICK RODAN

Soon after Dick, The Rathburns hit the stage, did not recover any of the videos from this night just a few photos that I shot. Thankfully photog Kenny caught them the night before at the Hideout and got more photos. I want everyone to remember the Rathburns because one day they’re going to be huge. Vocals need a little work and the rest of the band needs to step up a bit but frontwoman Frances Rose does a spectacular job embodying her music. She has a special energy and can take this band to the next level with a bit more polishing. Check every single band mentioned and covered in this four part Indie Week series. The only issues other than the 500 wristbands was that my photographer had trouble returning to a venue after brief migration to shoot the bands she was required. All festivals have this same issue when it comes to media at festivals, we must have access to get the most coverage possible. Until next year my friends keep it rocking and who knows maybe I’ll hit up Indie Week Europe in Manchester!

STARSET LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014

Words are flowing with ease because now I can breathe and actually focus on writing this editorial. The photos I shot were lost and I was trying to recover them somehow, finally mission is accomplished and they’re all edited. I was very happy that long time FridaeTV photographer Joanna made it to shoot a bit of the last two sets. There was to be four bands on the bill but apparently “Devil You Know” had some car troubles and did not make it to Toronto for the set. Was looking forward to seeing them perform but shit happens! Before we get into the meaty part of the editorial I must say if you don’t know who Lacuna Coil is I suggest you listen to a few tunes and then come back to read the rest of this review.

CROWD @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014INCURA LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014

The first band on stage at The Opera House was Incura originally from Alberta and now transplanted to Vancouver. The band was support for the Canadian leg of the tour and I was so glad I made it to catch their set! Last time I saw Incura rock out was at Canadian Music week…I think? Who knows I could be lying, it’s been a while! Regardless, I don’t get tired of watching them play their hearts out on stage. I wish the Opera House would add some front lighting and not just backlighting always drowning out the performers.INCTINCURA LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014

It’s always a challenge to shoot at that venue but at least there was a barricade and mini pit to shoot from, very rare for the Opera House. Kyle Gruninger is the epitome of what a lead vocalist is, he actually sings the bands original material without all the bells and whistles and performs each track like it’s the last song he will sing…One day, they will be rocking arenas! They had an extended set due to the transportation issues of “Devil You Know” leaving a gap in the line up. The crowd didn’t seem to mind at all, I recognized quite a few tunes “Get The Gun”, “Who You Are”, “Greatest Con” and a few more. The other members in the band are: Phil Gardner – Drums, Jim McLaren – Keys, Jono Olson – Bass and Gatlin Fitzgerald – Lead Guitar. The band was extremely entertaining, every set is better than the last but some improvements still need to be made. McLaren on the Keys needs to be a little more vibrant, he looked bored some of the time and not that into the tunes. I cannot wait to see the next phase of progress for Incura.

INCURA LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE SEPT 28TH 2014 TORONTO - Photo By: Fridae MattasINCURA LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014

Up next was a fresh band for me, Starset from Columbus, Ohio. I was the only one shooting the first two bands and didn’t know what to think when the band emerged on stage with lit space helmets on their head and rocking in black tights. The only one not in costume was lead vox Dustin Bates, the rest of the band Ron DeChant, Adam Gilbert and Brock Richards were glowing.

STARSET LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014STARSET LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014Starset were very fun to shoot and easy on the ears, I was really liking their tunes especially the catchy single “My Demons” from their debut record “Transmissions”. I will definitely need to check out the full record. The only thing I can think of that this band needs to fix is visual, they had this giant screen with the bands logo on it beside the keyboard. It did look cool for a minute but then got in the way, you could barely see the drummer or the vocalist when he was standing behind it. The music was good, a little much on the electrification of the vocals but I thoroughly enjoyed this band and will hit up another set if they reach Toronto again.

Continuing the trend of not dragging this on let’s chat about the headliners, before there was Evanescence, Lacuna Coil brought the goth metal melodies and vocals back in the early nineties. The one and only Italian GodFathers of Goth Rock Lacuna Coil has had some mild success, I’ve heard the bands music for a long time and when I found out they were hitting Toronto, had to cover them! There are many bands out there that deserve much more success and exposure than the current crop of shitterific mainstream entertainment. All of the bands on this Broken Crown Halo tour are part of group “A” the fantastic bands that should be heard.

LACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014LACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014

Over the years Lacuna Coil has gained quite a loyal fanbase and not just in Europe, these talented Italianos from Milano have made a name for themselves across the globe. The band is: Cristina Scabbia – Vocals, Andrea Ferro – Vocals, Marco Coti Zelati – Bass, Marco ‘Maus’ Biazzi – Guitars and Ryan Blake Folden on the Drums .

LACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014LACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE 2014 - PHOTO BY: JOANNA GLEZAKOS FOR FRIDAE TV

Lacuna Coil had a few cool looking crowns decorating the stage and once they migrated out they we’re greeted with cheers as they kicked off their well blended fifteen track set with big tune Trip The Darkness off of Dark Adrenaline. That tune was soon followed by Spellbound from Shallow Life. Vocals by Andrea Ferro were almost flawless, he gave the people what they wanted…A Performance! I noticed some technical issues with the microphones but Ferro embraced it like a champ. Cristina’s vocals were strong, she sang her heart out and the fans couldn’t get enough, especially when they played Depeche Mode cover “Enjoy The Silence” to end the set. I liked Lacuna Coil’s rendition of the song much better than the original. Maus Biazzi on the axe was beyond incredible those licks were spectacular to hear! The beat was tight thanks to stellar stick handler Ryan Blake Folden and Zelati’s Bass lines were on point.

LACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE 2014 - PHOTO BY JOANNA GLEZAKOS FOR FRIDAETVLACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE 2014 - PHOTO BY JOANNA GLEZAKOS FOR FRIDAETV

After I shot some photos I was watching the set from behind the soundbooth, the best view in the house! They had some fabulous lighting, still backlit but you must always work with what you have. It was fun to see the bands lighting tech enjoying the show as much as the fans, never seen a crew member so into the music. Rhythmically, he was in sync with every beat the band played and it translated on stage, now that’s passion! I loved watching and hearing the songs I’ve heard on the albums come to life.

LACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE MONDAY SEPT 28TH 2014LACUNA COIL LIVE @ THE OPERA HOUSE 2014 - PHOTO BY JOANNA GLEZAKOS FOR FRIDAETV

The encore’s were a mix of old and new, first was Nothing Stands In Our Way from the current release Broken Crown Halo and the last tune the band played before lights out was Our Truth off of their album Karmacode. Huge thank you to Jon who linked it up and Lacuna Coil for having me! I enjoyed myself and will be seeing all of these bands again at some point in the future. 5 music notes out of 5 ♪♪♪♪♪ for each band, Lacuna Coil, Starset and Incura are all worth your time and support!

Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.
