Last Sunday I made it for a few hours to wander Krinos’s Taste Of The Danforth with the family, this year it was held August 8th to 10th. The Danforth is no stranger to me, I grew up there like the many Torontonian Greek kids, if I dropped my Dad’s name people would know him. My Dad once owned a little cafe restaurant on the strip beside Christina’s called “Moonlite Cafe”, which is now “Stixx” mediterranean flare kitchen as seen in the photo below.
Throughout the years, the street foodfest has gained some esteem to become one of those international festivals tourists congregate to. The authenticity of Greekness has dwindled since my childhood, when the Danforth was at its peak. Now you have Miss Asia Pageant delegates and Canadian bands taking over the stages. I didn’t hear any Bouzouki nor did I see any of my culture being showcased, all they had was overpriced mediocre food and only 35% of it was Greek. As a Greek Canadian I was a little offended and disappointed, then again the Danforth lost its shine after one of its most favorite people died. Regardless, the cash grab was what it was and the thousands of people wandering the streets were having a great time, including the ones at the Expendables3 live action show.
A past coworker hit me up to inform me that he would be doing a show during the festivities at the Logan and Danforth stage. Normally I cover music, films, dance, sports basically anything artistic, but I have never covered this type of performance. Presented by XLimit Entertainment, a stunt performance team doing a live action skit promoting the Expendables 3 film, which opened in theaters yesterday. It was pretty cool and some of the techniques were too slick, the fight choreography was not bad, my Dad probably would have approved! You can check out the video of the performance below and some shots I took of the festivities during my time in the old hood.
