Big-Break-300x164 ENTERTAINMENT ONE & BEGIN AGAIN GIVE CANADIAN MUSICIANS THEIR BIG BREAK

WITH A CHANCE TO WIN A MUSICAL RECORDING SESSION AND A SHOT AT A

DISTRIBUTION DEAL WORTH UP TO $10,000.

TORONTO – JUNE 17 2014 – Entertainment One (eOne) and Begin Again are on the search for Canada’s top undiscovered music talent! Just steps away from their Big Break, Canadian singers and bands can upload their original works to a new YouTube contest (www.youtube.com/beginagainmovie) to be entered for a chance to win a musical recording session at Metalworks Studios and a Digital Distribution opportunity from eOne Music, the #1 independent music distributor in North America, worth up to $10,000!

Contestants must rally their friends, fans and followers to vote for their original work to avoid elimination. Only the top four artists make it through to the final round.  Canadian Recording Artist and Winner of Canadian Idol Eva Avila is joined by Eric Alper (Director of Media Relations at eOne Music and Host of ThatEricAlper’s Show on SiriusXM), Nathan Quinn (A&R and Label Acquisitions at eOne Music) and Kevin Dietz of Metalworks Studios in judging the four finalists and selecting the winning song.

image_242471_4“This inspiring film is set in NYC, and in a lot of ways, YouTube has the same huge caliber of undiscovered talent. Musicians can approach this like an open mic opportunity and do an original song to get heard by hundreds of thousands of music lovers,” explains Kai Exos, Creative Director at SPOKE and musician in his own right.

Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.

“eOne Music Canada’s mission is to discover Canada’s next big star and showcase their stunning talent to listeners here, and around the world,” says Eric Alper, Director of Media Relations for eOne Music Canada. “We’re thrilled to be part of the Begin Again YouTube contest, so get your best song ready!”

The campaign, developed by creative agency, SPOKE, lives on YouTube and is powered by a custom YouTube contesting engine. The launch is supported by a heavy Social Media buy on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter as well as in-store POS at HMV, that forms part of eOne’s broader wide-release Media campaign, which also includes broadcast, digital, social, print, radio and Out of Home.

eOne opens Begin Again in theatres across Canada on July 11.

BRAMPTON BEAST VS ALLEN AMERICANS - POWERADE CENTRE APRIL 11TH 2

Back in October 2013 I went to one of the first ever Brampton Beast games, for a new team in one of Toronto’s suburbs the turn out was pretty good considering there really wasn’t much press about the league other than the Brampton Guardian and maybe another indie sports blog. I’m in Brampton a lot so I decided to launch FridaeTV sports with The Brampton Beast CHL Hockey team. I wanted to do a few interviews, some happened others didn’t but next season, more interviews. This team has some very talented players like Tylor Michel, Andrew Fournier, Calin Wild, Jamie Vanderveeken, Andrew Darrigo, Scott Howes, Matt Caruana, Jason Pitton, Mike MacIsaac and of course the goalies Grant Rollheiser and Kris Westblom who are turning into some great goaltenders any NHL team would be lucky to have!

BRAMPTON BEAST VS ALLEN AMERICANS - POWERADE CENTRE APRIL 11TH 2

Game 5 was scoreless in the first period against the 2013 CHL Champions The Allen Americans, the toughest team in the CHL to beat. It wasn’t until the second period where the Beast scored once and ended up losing the game and their playoff run 4-1. No need to be sad the new season is only a few months away and for the debut of the only Canadian team in the Central Hockey League the Brampton Beast kicked some serious ass, coming in 6th overall in the CHL’s regular season. Many hockey fans complain about the Maple Leafs never winning and rarely making the playoffs, go out and support those less publicized professional teams like The Brampton Beast, The Toronto Marlies, even Mississauga has a Hockey team! That’s all for this season, major thanks to Bonnie and The Brampton Beast for having me, hoping to see more people out to the home games in the 2014/2015 season and I promise to get an even better shot of the puck going into the net than this one here.

MATT WEBB OF MARIANAS TRENCH TO RELEASE NEW EP!

MATT WEBB

OF MARIANAS TRENCH RELEASES SOLO EP FEBRUARY 4

 &

HEADLINING TOUR BEGINS MARCH 5

TORONTO, ON – JUNO Award winning guitarist of Marianas Trench, Matt Webb, will release his new EP, Right Direction (604 Records/Universal Music Canada) on February 4. Exploring a simplistic approach to recording his solo effort, the four-track EP includes the soulful first single “Right Direction,” slated for radio release next month. Available for pre-order beginning January 21 via the 604 Records Store, fans who order in advance will get a signed copy of the release. iTunes will also host an exclusive version of Right Direction, which will include two additional b-sides. This March, backed by a full band, Webb will tour across Canada with special guests Fake Shark – Real Zombie! and Jessica Lee.

“I was pumped to get back in the studio and track some of my own music again, says Webb.  “Since the release of my first EP Coda and Jacket, I’ve had nearly three years of new experiences to draw from.  Both Marianas and personal life left me with plenty of inspiration.”

Recorded at Armoury Studios, Webb along with lauded producer Kevin “Kevvy Mental” Maher, drummer Al Glassford, bassist Peter Davyduck and pianist Andrew Belson crafted Right Directionwhich takes a distinct turn from the elaborate pop rock anthems Webb and his band are known for. The result? A mid-tempo release that’s endearingly raw, honest and lyrically graceful. The jazz-inspired drums on “Heartbreaker,” and acoustic fingerpicking on “123,” accentuate the EP’s melodic vibe, and highlight Webb’s acute attention to detail.

Webb continues, “I truly feel like I found my groove with Right Direction – the songs, the sounds, the lyrics – they really represent me as a person. My goal was to create a cohesive and organic sounding record, something that I could crank in my car while driving at night – that’s it. I can’t WAIT to share this stuff with as many people as possible.”

MY DARKEST DAYS LIVE @ THE RED DOG – FEATURE EDITORIAL REVIEW

MY DARKEST DAYS

LIVE @ THE RED DOG

FEATURE EDITORIAL REVIEW

By: Fridae Mattas

Found out about this show when a few girls were talking about it as I waited for the same bus. Then a thought popped into my head maybe I should go on a mission, haven’t seen those Larries in forever and the fans searching MDD on FridaeTV everyday will be happy! At first I was going to force one of my photographers to mission with me to The Historic Red Dog in Peterborough on Friday, November 15th, for the first My Darkest Days performance in like a year. Then I remembered a pretty awesome photographer who lives there and would let me use some of her shots if I needed to. So I trekked it to the boons myself, I’m a big girl now and none of my friends were free that day except a stalker ex who does not belong on anymore adventures! “Laughs!” Almost did not make it out of the city because someone stole my wallet with all my money except forty five bucks that I had put in my pocket at some point for some reason and glad I did! Pissed off, frustrated, trying to cancel my cards, I was very close to cancelling my journey overall and just go back home. Then the little voice in my head kept saying, “You’re already halfway there, just do it bitch! Do it! Do it!” My spontaneous Aquarian nature carries me through life, as my curiosity and determination drives me, I’m always up for an adventure! Fuck staying at a hotel I rented a house down the street from the venue, I was not about to trek it back to the city that night.

The rest of the evening was fantastic, I was already tipsy from all the free beers when the band was about to hit the stage at the packed Peterboonz venue. Last time I saw My Darkest Days live was either at the Opera House or when they opened for Three Days Grace at The Direct Energy Centre in like 2010, really don’t remember. Now, frontman Matt Walst is Lead Vox for Three Days Grace and My Darkest Days is missing guitarist Sal Costa who left the band last year. My intuition kind of already knew Sal would leave the band the day I met him. Costa is always pleasant and polite when I run into him but have not heard boo from him in years, I’m sure he found others to hook him up with shows. Like many in this industry we all get busy and drift our separate ways the busier we become or sometimes the fame hungry egos take flight and feel they are too cool until their bubble has burst. A good example of losing touch is changing phones, not many of the same contacts are in my new phone from previous years because my old phone swiped everything but I still talk to my friends, real recognizes real and always finds each other. Just because you don’t see something, doesn’t mean it’s not there. Turned out my sense about Sal was as authentic as my “Chavril” duet prediction, but hey, I think My Darkest Days found a stellar replacement! An incredible guitarist whom I thought should have been in this band a while ago, hopefully they keep Trevor MacLeod and he keeps them.

People need to calm down and stop hating! Bands have new members all the time, so many rude comments in regards to Walst numero dos stepping in to save his other band of brothers so they can support their families and not disappoint the fans. I’m sure he probably doesn’t mind all the perks and groupies that come along with the touring life but it’s like people sometimes forget that touring is work. Being in a band and rocking out for the fans is their job, he has big shoes to fill but clearly was the obvious choice for anyone who is loyal to their family and friends. Yes, vocals are not the same because they are different people, with different types of voices. Not to mention, Adam has what, like ten years more professional experience on stage and people must be reminded Walst has contributed his talents on a few tunes for Three Days Grace records in the past. I love Adam’s voice he has grown into an incredible vocalist and will always be one of my favorites but he left his band and fans high and dry just before a huge tour and regardless of the reasoning behind it, that is not cool. As of yet I have not had the time to trek it to see Walst play with Three Days Grace, but hey, who knows? Maybe in the very near future you will get my full perspective on that set, if the label lets me…This was not the first time I’ve been to Peterborough or the Red Dog it was my like my fourth “laughs”. Previous expeditions were to check homies Art Of Dying and I was not alone for those journeys, good times! Amazingly, I actually knew more people this time, did not feel completely out of place in the small town, except for the usual randoms staring at me for long periods of time. It wasn’t just men who creeped me out this time some of the females were pretty special. My Darkest Days has always been a blonde Matt Walst – Vox/Guitar it was different seeing the darker doo, Doug Oliver – Drums and Brendan McMillan – Bass with Reid Henry on Keys and newly added Trevor MacLeod who is in “Cold Creek County” with Oliver and McMillan and was in a few other bands back in the day.Trevor is a true rock and roll guitarist in every aspect, he is not one to stand still on stage like a scared little goose and no more long hair, he finally chopped the bush! Didn’t even recognize him at first without the hair, we shall see how things go.

They opened with a cover of AC/DC’s TNT which Reid “Mean Jean” Henry was on lead vocals for and did a smashing job! I was surprised how well he actually did, little Smudgie the roadie stage tech has come a very long way! Reid is developing into quite a talent thanks to his older MDD brothers from different Mothers taking him under their wing. Once the song came on I was like wait I know this one so I started to record it but my mic battery died so you can’t hear shit. I had a spare battery in my wallet which was no longer with us so I just took my mic off for the rest of the tunes using the camera’s internal microphone.MY DARKEST DAYS LIVE @ THE RED DOG 2013 PETERBOROUGHMY DARKEST DAYS WITH CHRIS MILLAR LIVE @ THE RED DOG 2013 PETERBListening to AC/DC always reminds me of when I ran into Vocalist Brian Johnson on my lunch break when the band hit Toronto for a show a few years ago. He was super nice, actually just randomly started jibbering away when I was walking past him. Couldn’t place his face, it was familiar to me but I sure as hell couldn’t remember his name. I made a comment about his hat and he introduced himself doing a little dance, that was funny coming from this little man, he was clearly a character. Once we finished chatting it finally came to me what band he was in. As I turned around to walk back over to work this older woman popped out of nowhere and started screaming in my face. She was asking me if I knew who I just talked to, before I could even answer she yelled “Brian fucking Johnson! Brian fucking Johnson! Oh my God I wish I was you! Do you know how lucky you are?” that was too funny, I was trying so hard not to laugh as she asked me what he smelled like, if I got his number and other stupid ass questions I didn’t answer.

Much props to you little Reid who looked like a member of the Beatles, he’s growing up and refining his talents, Henry is not the only one who has been growing into his talents. Brendan McMillan who can now have his mohawk back is much more relaxed and looked genuinely excited to be there. He totally killed it on Stutter and it was very natural when he was interacting with his band mates. After they rocked TNT it was time to move on to a blend of originals and covers like the formerly stated “Stutter“, “Move Your Body”, “Save Me”, “Come Undone”. They even covered the Grandkids’ “ClockTower” featuring a Larry named Chris Millar but that wasn’t the only feature of the night. Nervous Brandon Scott of Cold Creek County helped Walst with vocals on the ballad “Without You” which can be seen here. I am really digging their renditions of LMR and High Road a Medley containing a blend of R.E.M’s “Losing My Religion” with Nirvanaesque vocals, Three Days Grace’s “High Road” mellowed out to the same melody of their tune “Set It On Fire”. Walst’s vocals were almost pitch perfect and the rest of the band did a phenomenal job with backup, you can view said medley here.

Can smasher Doug Oliver joins in on the improvements but he’s always been a slick snare slayer. If anyone in this band has been beyond consistent with his skill level it would be Dougie, his tricks are smoother and he was looking happier than the last time I saw him play. There were a group of fans I heard about that drove in from the US, I believe the farthest trek was Nebraska and here I thought my little two hour journey was a trek!Speaking of fans, I suck at filming in crowds because I get scared of the crazies from past experiences, yet I still go in them…The media pit is my best friend but this time they didn’t have a pit so I hid in a corner stage left and took some photos while filming, not the best shots but good enough. Everyone was pretty chill except for this one sloppy fuglymess drunk chick behind me with drink in hand spilling everywhere! I was going to crack her jaw if she didn’t stop pushing me on purpose, her drink was getting a little too close to my camera and clothing also dripping all over this short girls head beside. My filming is ass thanks to her but low and behold a few tunes with her crazy drunk ass passed and she was booted from the bar, some people just can’t handle their liquor. After the drunkerella fiasco, it was winding down to the last tune of the night, the hit poppy rock tune “Porn Star Dancing“. Chizzy (Chad) honorary lifetime member of My Darkest Days filled in for Luda, spitting into the mic like he just came home. I could not see the rest of the band during that tune but everyone was a good sport with all those fans on stage! The performance was the best I have seen to date, the sound man was fantastic he did a superb job and the crowd was loving every second. I noticed all the touring has been good for building their skill sets and taking their talent to the next level. Even Matt has made huge progress with his vocals, he has more control, they are steadier and his range has grown. Not quite there yet with the growls but much improved and he did not seem as shy on stage but still has a lot of work to do. Forget the haters just be who you are, keep practicing and everyting will be as it should. Fronting both Three Days Grace and My Darkest Days is a challenge but, the talent is there just remember not to burn yourself out. The band had an autograph signing meet and greet after the set, talking and taking pictures with their fans. Initially I wanted to get a few shots of the signing but was preoccupied with my bleeding finger dripping too much blood, how it happened who knows? Obviously at some point during the set, possibly drunkerella’s fault…Only the future can tell what is in store for My Darkest Days, I will definitely try my best to be at the next show to support these underdogs and their catchy tunes, as should you! I give this performance 4 music notes ♪♪♪♪ out of 5.

FRIDAE TV SPORTS SPOTLIGHT: GRANT ROLLHEISER – BRAMPTON BEAST

FRIDAE TV SPORTS SPOTLIGHT

GRANT ROLLHEISER

By: Fridae Mattas

Caught up with Brampton Beast Goalie #37 , Grant Rollheiser after the game last Friday November 8th. Unfortunately they lost that game but managed to win the tie breaker game of the 3 game series 2-0 against the Allen Americas (CHL league champions and Dallas Stars affiliate team). Wish I was there to have seen Rollheiser guarding the gate and keeping the skilled Americans out of the Beast’s net. At 6’4 you would think the Chilliwack, BC native would be a little slower with all that gear on, not Rollheiser I’ve seen this kid in action against the Arizona Sundogs and the Beast won that game 4-0. Friday’s game was intense, the Americans were out for blood so much more hostile than the last team and I noticed the referee’s were calling a penalty for every minor infraction. Brampton did get a goal thanks to Beast #9 Left Wing Andrew Fournier sliding one passed the Allen American’s steel cage goaltender Bryan Pitton (who ironically is from Brampton). Fournier was assisted by #10 Right Wing Rob Collins and #16 Center Tylor Michel.

The Beast can really slay the ice, a good old fashioned fight took place between #4 Beast Defense Andrew Darrigo and Allen American #21 Garrett Klotz, obviously both were awarded penalties for that. Fights are dangerous but it is a part of the aggressive game that Hockey is. The Beast are hitting the road until the next home games December 12th, 13th and 14th you can grab your tickets here! Check out the interview with Grant and the gallery of stills from the game.

BRAMPTON BEAST FAN FEST; THE BEAST IS ON THE LOOSE!

BRAMPTON BEAST FAN FEST

THE BEAST IS ON THE LOOSE!

By: Fridae Mattas

Last Friday, October 11th 2013 I trekked it to the Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ontario just thirty minutes from Downtown Toronto. The reason for my journey was to cover a new professional Hockey team at Brampton’s Powerade Centre. A colleague told me about this event called “Brampton Beast Fan Fest”, why not hit it up? Sixty-five percent of FridaeTV fans are men and we all know you boys love sports. POWERADE CENTREHockey is simple to understand and is one of the first sports you are introduced to as a Canadian kid. I remember many times playing street hockey with the boys and attempting to play ice hockey on my brother’s friends’ homemade backyard rink. Turns out my preferance lays with summer sports because I can’t skate to save my life and I don’t like the cold! My brother on the other hand played hockey as a kid like pretty much every Canadian male growing up. As the eldest sister I went to the games and helped lace up his skates tight enough…Luckily I learned how to lace skates on school field trips to the community rink.BRAMPTON BEAST FANFEST: BRAMPTON MAYOR SUSAN FENNELLBrampton’s Mayor Susan Fennell was in attendance, she is a pretty amazing Woman! I had no idea how close hockey was to her heart until I found out she was one of the founders of the Nation Womens Hockey League (WNHL). Bringing a professional hockey team to her city made perfect sense. Mayor Fennell said a few words prior to introducing the team after Boomer the mascot made his on ice debut. The team played a little game against eachother “The Black VS The White”, I assume the Black team were the guests on the scoreboard because they were killing it and ended up winning the little scrimmage. BRAMPTON BEAST FORWARD - LEFT WING - ANDREW FOURNIERBRAMPTON BEAST WHITE(HOME) TEAM - L TO R: TYLER MATHESON, MATT CARUANA, STEVE WARD, BENI BERISHAThey chose some pretty slick players to be on their roster including Brampton’s own Jason Pitton who was number 14 on the Black team and a NY Islander draft pick in 2004. A few other stand out players I noticed on the Black team were #12: Left Wing – Andrew Fournier, #6: Left Defense – Jamie VanderVeeken, #8: Right Wing – Brett Vandehogen, #11: Centre – Brett Smith and #9: Right Wing – Tylor Michel. On the White team the players whom I thought were seriously skilled were; #5: Left Defense – Mike MacIntyre, #13: Left Wing – Josh McQuade, #11: Centre – Matt Caruana and #9: Right Wing – Rob Collins. The teams coaches are Mark DeSantis – Head Coach and Brent Hughes as Assistant coach, major props to all the Goaltenders but I still don’t know who is who, the three that played are: Kris Westblom, Grant Rollheiser, Peter Di Salvo.BRAMPTON BEAST GOALIEBRAMPTON BEAST PLAYERSThe Tomboy within was loving every minute of this event once I got to the right side of the arena! “Laughs” I walked in on kids practicing and everyone just stared at me, as I looked around I noticed two ice rinks making it quite clear I was at the wrong end of the Powerade Centre…So I walked back outside and around where I found a giant Brampton Beast blow up and a door with media entrance on it. Tada!BRAMPTON SPORTS HALL OF FAMEBRAMPTON BEAST: BLACK TEAM BENCHMade it just on time and so glad they let me wander the arena! Who knew Brampton had a sports hall of fame? You know now! The Beast have some pretty cool affiliates like the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lighting, Canada’s own Hockey Legend Steve Yzerman and GM of The Lightning announced their affiliation in August along with the Syracuse Crunch. The teams name was chosen by residents of Brampton after a contest was held to name the team. All of this has to do with Mayor Fennell’s love for the game and she is doing a phoenominal job getting things done for her city…Can’t say the same for Toronto’s Mayor…BRAMPTON BEAST HOCKEY TEAMBRAMPTON BEAST - LEFT WINGS: MIKE MACISAAC (TEAM WHITE) & ANDREW FOURNIER (bLACK TEAM)The Beast is the only Canadian team in the Central Hockey League (CHL) which is absoluty amazing and will be playing the first of three games against the Arizona Sundogs tomorrow Friday October 18th. Single game tickets range between $13 to $28, to purchase your tickets click here!BRAMPTON BEAST HOCKEY TEAMBRAMPTON BEAST - L TO R: ANDREW FOURNIER & ERIK SPADYOnce the game wrapped a few players came out to meet and greet the fans, sign some autographs and take a few photos. The fans enjoyed their time meeting the new team and the players seemed to enjoy time with the fans.BRAMPTON BEAST - L TO R: ANDREW FOURNIER, ERIK SPADY, JAMIE VANDBRAMPTON BEAST - L TO R: ERIK SPADY, JAMIE VANDERVEEKEN, JOSH MCQUADEThanks to Bonnie and the fabulous people I met (Ladies gracias, the training camp creep sheet was very helpful.) I plan on checking out a game soon and do an little interview with a few of the players. Possibly the October 21st game where legendary Hockey Hall of Fame Goalie Johnny Bower will be dropping the puck for that game. Mr. Bower is probaby the only former Toronto Maple Leaf alive that can say he’s won four Stanley Cups as a Leaf.

BRAMPTON BEAST - JOSH McQUADE & ANDREW DARRIGOAll Photography By: Fridae MattasA great time was had by all including myself and one of the DJ’s who was jamming out by herself in a corner…Canada, this is your chance to see more professional hockey, come out to the Powerade Centre and support your new team The Brampton Beast!

By: Fridae Mattas

Amidst the whirlwind of press for her new album “Secret Sulk”, Nikki of Dolls (You may know her as Nikki Awesome.) had a few minutes to catch up and share some of her life.

Fridae: Hello, Hello! It has been awhile since we hijacked a ballroom, how are you?

DOLLS – Nikki: OMG I almost forgot about ballroom-hijacking. I mean, nowadays they just give themselves up. It’s been a while!

Fridae: What has been going on in Awesome land since we last chatted a few years back?

DOLLS – Nikki:  So much.  I’ve pretty much left the ‘Nikki Awesome’ thing behind (DOLLS website launching soon, but won’t change my Facebook fan page), relocated to the UK (three grey and glorious years this summer), learned how to produce my own music, have thrown myself about traveling, meet/greeting some of my favourite artists and making ridiculous videos.  Basically, I’ve spent the last three years regaining control of my art and having FUN again after leaving the major label game, which has definitely been a good move.

Fridae: How was Dolls created? If you could tell the world and myself a little more background information on the history of Dolls.

DOLLS – Nikki:  DOLLS was initially an outlet for me to create music with a darker overall sound which wasn’t really compatible with The Royal Society’s.  I always listened to synth-heavy music with a dirty, raw vibe, like Nine Inch Nails, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, and Joy Division/New Order.  I also really love some of the pop artists of the 80’s like Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys and Men Without Hats, all acts that had depth in their lyricism as well as wicked synth lines.  I found that many mainstream artists were not into that style when I was last living in North America. There weren’t many artists making a crossover between ‘alternative’ and ‘synthpop,’ coming from a commercial pop background (though some were crossing over the other way).  I’ve always written all my own lyrics and melodies, played guitar and keys, but I felt despite that, I was limited to one style of music by virtue of having had a hit in that genre and lacking the resources to produce music on my own.  Even though The Royal Society’s fans were wonderful and the media outlets were amazing in supporting the project, the club scene was feeling a little superficial to me.  After losing several years worth of work to a series of heavily political power plays (in case you ever wondered why there wasn’t a Royal Society album), I began learning production in order to make the music I wanted, so as not to have to take direction from people who didn’t get me as an artist.  It wasn’t the easiest transition and I probably burned some bridges, but ultimately I feel more empowered and happier doing what I want to do, and if people don’t ‘get it’ I don’t have to answer to anyone.

Fridae: Good for you! It’s seems like every artist comes to learn in their own time, that the only person who can truly relay your vision is you.

Fridae:  How did you come up with the new records title?

DOLLS – Nikki: It was little bit of a joke at my own expense. I felt like in writing the material for DOLLS, people saw me as being a bit of a ‘poor little bitch girl,’ biting the hand that had fed me. Because the songs were a lot more angry, less commercially friendly, and openly bitter about things that usually get hushed up. Dolls music is a total contrast to The Royal Society vibe which is all “let’s party, everything’s rad.”. I wrote so many songs over the last three years that chronicled some experiences pretty viciously, and it turned out that after incessant (often unsolicited) input from everyone else I was (un)surprisingly kind of pissed off.  Making Secret Sulk the album’s title seemed appropriate in the sense that everything I did musically and the way I did it was otherwise so atypical and ‘inappropriate’.

Fridae: Did you work with someone on the new album or did you create everything yourself?

DOLLS – Nikki: Millions of hours alone in my bedroom. I didn’t have any previous experience with production outside of being in-studio, so it’s been an insanely huge learning curve, which is obviously not yet complete.  The new (unreleased) stuff is a lot more refined in terms of sound quality (since I have upgraded my equipment) but it’s still DOLLS: dark cynical synth/wave with pop vocals.

1dolls_nice_high_resFridae: What separates Dolls from all the other artists trying to break the global scene?

DOLLS – Nikki: It’s no secret that the whole music industry is upside down.  Everybody’s looking to sign the prepackaged ‘next big thing,’ so I’d say it’s pretty rare to be invited in to hear the ‘flaws’ and outtakes from the onset, especially from someone who was formerly perceived as being the prepackaged ‘thing’ . DOLLS is the evolution of an artist, not the ‘delivery of a product.’  In my opinion, flaws are what resonate with people and give the audience something real to connect with.  The pitch-perfect image airbrushing that has become par for the course is not what I want to buy into or sell anymore.  Imperfections have always intrigued me; whether it was hearing a wrong note, a crack in the vocal performance – those kinds of things are so smoothed-out these days that I feel it’s tremendously different to allow fans in on a project’s development. Not just delivering a polished focus group-approved sound or image, which means releasing material that hasn’t been over-refined.  Which is unconventional in the current system.  I’ve chosen to work outside the model of recent tradition, and I will make mistakes, backtrack, change things around, have opinions that will piss people off. It’s more interesting (to me) to throw down total chaos rather than play a formulaic game, shuffling alongside everyone else, everyone crossing their fingers for a major to pick it up.  Getting signed doesn’t always benefit an artist, more often than not it just brings in a bunch of watered-down opinions on how you can best sell your music like it’s a breakfast cereal.

Fridae: Are you planning on hitting the road anytime soon?

DOLLS – Nikki: Definitely, but nothing’s set in stone yet.  I’ve had interest in the UK and Europe, but because I don’t have label support it’s a bigger deal to commit to touring, so I’m still working out the bugs and deciding who I want to work with for the live show.

Fridae: If you could work with any artist in the music world today who would you choose?

DOLLS – Nikki: Trent Reznor, David Bowie or David Lynch.  I feel like they should come as a package-deal, just so I don’t have to hurt anyone’s feelings.

Fridae: Are there any other projects in the works?

DOLLS – Nikki: At the moment DOLLS is pretty all-consuming and there’s some deadly business waiting in the wings, but it’s all hush-hush, innit!  I’m just releasing my first collaboration with a Canadian artist since 2010 (On Your Lips with Toronto electro artist COINS), and have been talking with another UK indie artist (Magpies and Vagabonds) about a new concept project. He also did the Dustcover Mix of NOW NOW. Both tracks are on my Bandcamp and Soundcloud accounts for free download.

Fridae: Whose music are you playing on repeat right now that you could not possibly live without?

DOLLS – Nikki: I really like Miike Snow, Das Racist, HURTS and Paloma Faith.  I’m pretty shit at listening to new music, so I go through phases of not knowing about anything new and just snuggling into old faves, followed by frenzied accumulation of Spotify playlists.  I feel like not buying physical copies of albums combined with being so obsessive about learning production has changed the way I consume music; it’s like the line in Amadeus, about how sometimes there are just too many notes. When I (n)ever have spare time, I prefer to see plays, go to galleries, read.. Whatevs.

Fridae: Words of wisdom for aspiring artists….?

DOLLS – Nikki: Probably not to take anyone’s advice.  Nobody else knows how to develop your art better, and letting them try, almost invariably leaves you disappointed or risking relationships to maintain the integrity of your ideas.

Fridae: Where can people find your music?

DOLLS – Nikki:  DOLLS’ Secret Sulk is available for free on my Soundcloud account (http://soundcloud.com/dollsxx/sets/secret_sulk) and if people like it, it would be fantastic if they want to purchase it for whatever they think works; I’m asking for £5.00 on Bandcamp (http://dollsxx.bandcamp.com), which allows me to continue to make music and develop the project.

Fridae: Are there any last words you would like to share with the world?

DOLLS – Nikki:  “She probably had it coming.”

Fridae: LOL!! Thank you so much Mizz Nikki Dolls!

TORONTO, ON – (Monday, December 3, 2012) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds have confirmed details of an upcoming North American tour in support of Push the Sky Away, the fifteenth studio album by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, to be released in February 19, 2013 by Bad Seed Ltd. on CD, vinyl, digital download and as a deluxe edition.

The announcement of the tour coincides with the unveiling of Push The Sky Away opening track, “We No Who U R.” the first track to be released from Push the Sky Away.  At the heart of Push the Sky Away is a naturalism and warmth that makes it the most subtly beautiful of all the Bad Seeds albums. The contemporary settings of myths, and the cultural references that have time-stamped Nick’s songs of the twenty-first century mist lightly through details drawn from the life he observed around his seaside home, through the tall windows on the album’s mysterious and ambiguous cover.

The songs on this album took form in a modest notebook with shellac covers over the course of almost a year. The notebook is a treasured analogue artefact but the internet is equally important to Nick: Googling curiosities, being entranced by exotic Wikipedia entries “whether they’re true or not”. These songs convey how on the internet profoundly significant events, momentary fads and mystically-tinged absurdities sit side-by-side and question how we might recognize and assign weight to what’s genuinely important.

Push the Sky Away was produced by Nick Launay and recorded at La Fabrique, a recording studio based in a 19th Century mansion in the South of France, where the walls of the main studio are lined with an immense collection of classical vinyl.

“We No Who U R” sets this album in our time; we’re living with the consequences of actions and innovations that seemed so progressive in the industrial era. There’s a calm assessment of the gravity of the situation, and humility. This whole album has a generosity of spirit that’s established here by a children’s choir singing “we know there’s no need to forgive.”

“We No Who U R” is available as of today, December 3rd both as an instant grat download with every pre-order album purchase via www.nickcave.com or iTunes and can also be purchased as a single download from all digital retailers.
