Roberta Armani chose to throw a lavish star studded TIFF cocktail party at the CN Tower with longtime friend Producer Edward Zwick in tow. Many familiar faces like Anthony Mackie, Jessica Chastain and Chloe Grace Moretz graced the black carpet with the one and only Mark Ronson as the Spinmaster of the evening. The exclusive TIFF bash was thrown in honour of the world premier for “Films of City Frames“, another Armani endeavour continuing to support emerging talent in various cultural art forms, from fashion to films. Films of City Frames, created in collaboration with Luxottica and Rai Cinema, is an initiative that involved the work of six prestigious international film schools. The students were given the task of creating short films that feature caught moments, metropolitan landscapes, and emotional situations, using Giorgio Armani‘s Frames of Life glasses as a perceptual filter. Enjoy the shots of the black carpet below all thanks to fabulous FridaeTV Photographer Dipan Cheema for braving the carpet.
Last Sunday I made it for a few hours to wander Krinos’s Taste Of The Danforth with the family, this year it was held August 8th to 10th. The Danforth is no stranger to me, I grew up there like the many Torontonian Greek kids, if I dropped my Dad’s name people would know him. My Dad once owned a little cafe restaurant on the strip beside Christina’s called “Moonlite Cafe”, which is now “Stixx” mediterranean flare kitchen as seen in the photo below.
Throughout the years, the street foodfest has gained some esteem to become one of those international festivals tourists congregate to. The authenticity of Greekness has dwindled since my childhood, when the Danforth was at its peak. Now you have Miss Asia Pageant delegates and Canadian bands taking over the stages. I didn’t hear any Bouzouki nor did I see any of my culture being showcased, all they had was overpriced mediocre food and only 35% of it was Greek. As a Greek Canadian I was a little offended and disappointed, then again the Danforth lost its shine after one of its most favorite people died. Regardless, the cash grab was what it was and the thousands of people wandering the streets were having a great time, including the ones at the Expendables3 live action show.
A past coworker hit me up to inform me that he would be doing a show during the festivities at the Logan and Danforth stage. Normally I cover music, films, dance, sports basically anything artistic, but I have never covered this type of performance. Presented by XLimit Entertainment, a stunt performance team doing a live action skit promoting the Expendables 3 film, which opened in theaters yesterday. It was pretty cool and some of the techniques were too slick, the fight choreography was not bad, my Dad probably would have approved! You can check out the video of the performance below and some shots I took of the festivities during my time in the old hood.
Better late than never right? Everything is edited and ready to go, Anime North 2014 came and went, honestly almost forgot about it! It’s always amazing to see so many people who are passionate about something without inhibitions, it was like Halloween in May. Anime North is a conference for people to showcase their creativity with cosplay outfits to be judged and a place of gathering for the cosplay community, where artists and vendors can showcase and sell their creations.
This conference is for those who love manga, comics, cosplay, basically anything animation that your heart desires. This year they introduced wrestling, it was pretty fun to watch the different characters fight each other, my favorite was Elmo vs Super Mario I thoroughly enjoyed it! A little disappointed when I didn’t find a cosplay creation that blew my mind and the robots were nowhere to be found but there were many Sailor Moons and Ursulas in flotation. The organization was incredible, a round of applause for the team that puts this together every year. It was very well organized and grows every year with added events at a few of the hotels around the Toronto Congress Centre. No violence, everyone was friendly and accepting, except one incident where a cool cosplay kid was being followed everywhere by instant fans.
If you really want to explore the world of cosplay, Anime North is a great starter destination but take it day by day it can get a little overwhelming. Enjoy the photos and video below, next year I’m hoping to find that mind-blasting cosplayer! Bring it!
Back in October 2013 I went to one of the first ever Brampton Beast games, for a new team in one of Toronto’s suburbs the turn out was pretty good considering there really wasn’t much press about the league other than the Brampton Guardian and maybe another indie sports blog. I’m in Brampton a lot so I decided to launch FridaeTV sports with The Brampton Beast CHL Hockey team. I wanted to do a few interviews, some happened others didn’t but next season, more interviews. This team has some very talented players like Tylor Michel, Andrew Fournier, Calin Wild, Jamie Vanderveeken, Andrew Darrigo, Scott Howes, Matt Caruana, Jason Pitton, Mike MacIsaac and of course the goalies Grant Rollheiser and Kris Westblom who are turning into some great goaltenders any NHL team would be lucky to have!
Game 5 was scoreless in the first period against the 2013 CHL Champions The Allen Americans, the toughest team in the CHL to beat. It wasn’t until the second period where the Beast scored once and ended up losing the game and their playoff run 4-1. No need to be sad the new season is only a few months away and for the debut of the only Canadian team in the Central Hockey League the Brampton Beast kicked some serious ass, coming in 6th overall in the CHL’s regular season. Many hockey fans complain about the Maple Leafs never winning and rarely making the playoffs, go out and support those less publicized professional teams like The Brampton Beast, The Toronto Marlies, even Mississauga has a Hockey team! That’s all for this season, major thanks to Bonnie and The Brampton Beast for having me, hoping to see more people out to the home games in the 2014/2015 season and I promise to get an even better shot of the puck going into the net than this one here.
The last game of the regular season for the Brampton Beast was on Sunday March 30th 2014 at Beast homebase Brampton’s Powerade Centre. The Brampton Beast won all three of the games in the series against The Rapid City Rush including the one I made it to, but only by one goal in overtime (4th period). Congrats for the wins and making it to their first ever playoffs! You can catch the Beast in action on home ice next week, second season begins Thursday April 10th, grab you tickets here!
