What more could you ask for than seeing one of your favourite bands right before your birthday? This past Thursday I had the amazing opportunity to catch Coheed and Cambria at Virgin Mobile’s Mod Club theatre in Toronto. I rushed to the venue after work just in time to catch Coheed’s set. Thankfully, they had set up a small photo pit for the show because normally the Mod Club is a free for all. We huddled inside the venue, squeezing past the already sweaty fans to our pit and waited in excitement for the show to start.

They started their set with No World for Tomorrow, an amazing opener that had me and everyone else in the crowd going wild. After our three songs we were ushered out, having to leave the venue through the back door, walk around the building and come back through the entrance to enjoy the rest of the set. I tried watching the show from downstairs but I was stuck at the back of the venue, not being able to get through the herd of sweaty crowd.

The venue was so foggy it would have been an asthmatics nightmare; I managed to squeeze my way upstairs and get a spot by the railing to catch the rest of the show. Despite the heat, it was an amazing show! Claudio’s voice is always a pleasure to listen to, he is one of the most talented singers I have ever heard and the band has great stage presence.

It was nice to see them in a smaller venue because last year I saw the band at the Kool Haus in a Neverender. They performed a special acoustic set and then ‘The Second Stage Turbine Blade’ from front to back. There was more energy in the Mod Club crowd than in the Kool Haus and the stage and venue is almost half the size! Needless to say it was a great set, a photo of their set list is posted and includes songs from SSTB, Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, In Keeping Secrets and their upcoming album The Afterman: Ascension. Though this set was shorter the band came back out for three encore songs and it was overall a much Better performance by the guys.

I was disappointed though, no coat check on a colder night and not as many moshers! Coheed’s a pretty heavy band and have really hard core dedicated fans, I was surprised at how small the pit was and how many people were standing still. The album is due out October 9th. You can pre-order a sweet limited deluxe box set which includes a 78 page book, 4 CD’s, VIP Tour Laminate, medallion, certificate and a documentary DVD. The VIP pass included in the box set grants you early entry to all shows that Coheed headlines, you will also receive special access on the Coheed website with an area to download all the music as it is released including Ascension (October 9th) and Descension (February 2013). Along with all of that you could always win tickets to their sold out show October 11th at Webster Hall in New York City. An amazing package for any Coheed fan!
